Obituaries

Dorothy Anne Bodenhausen, age 91, died May 3, 2017, in Burnsville, Minn.  She was born at home in Marquette, Kan., Aug. 18, 1925, delivered by her father Henry Huseman.

Dorothy attended a one room schoolhouse in Ellsworth, Kan., for grade school, Ellsworth High School, and Kansas State University. She was in the first class to graduate from KSU’s Dietetic Department in 1947. Dorothy met

Duane Miller at KSU, they were married in 1948, and had three children, Randall, Sandra, and Gregory. Duane died in 1970.  

Professionally, Dorothy interned at Scripps Metabolic Clinic in La Jolla, Calif., and worked as a dietitian in Topeka at Eventide Nursing Home, Topeka State Hospital and Stormont Vail Hospital. In 1977, she was elected President of the Kansas Dietetic Association and married Otto Bodenhausen.

Pamela K. Swindler, 50, of Salina, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2017 in Ellsworth, Kan.  
She was born Oct. 26, 1966 to Jim Morris and Karen (Rollet) Petty. She married Dale Swindler on May 24, 2015. Pamela graduated from Ellsworth High School. She was a medical coder for Mowery Clinic and Ellsworth County Medical Center.
Survivors include her husband, Dale Swindler; daughter, Kaley (RJ) Schnack; son, Ryan Rodriguez; father and step-mother, Jim and Vicki Morris; step-father, Jerry Petty; sisters, LeAnn (Darrell) Ploutz and Becky (John) Bailey; brothers, Bret (Betsy) Morris and Lance (Valerie) Morris; step-sons, Heath (Shengjie), Glenn Swindler and  Marcus Swindler; mother-in-law, Margaret Swindler; niece, Ashley (Lucas) Fulton; nephews, Andrew Ploutz, Tyler (Keegan) Bailey, Isabell and Cooper, Kristofer (Tara) Bailey, and Savannah, Kaleb and Braden Morris; two step-bothers and three step-sisters.

Sean Thomas Peterman, 46, passed away April 26, 2017 at the Rice County District Hospital in Lyons. He was born Oct. 27, 1970 in Albuquerque, N.M., the son of Robert and Sheila Harris Peterman. 

Sean has resided in Little River for the past 15 years. He graduated from Kellam High School, Virginia Beach, Va. Sean worked as a pipefitter. He was a member of the Corner Stone Masonic Lodge 219, Little River, and the NRA. 

Sean is survived by his parents, Robert and Sheila Peterman, Little, River; fiancé, Melissa Wolf, Little River; son, Shayne Peterman, Little River; daughter, Savannah Peterman, Edgewood, N.M.; brother, Rob Peterman, Salina; and sister, Karma Latasa, Jacksonville, Fla. 

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ben J.H. and Rosaline Peterman, and Sam and Mae Harris. 

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 29, at the Andover Lutheran Church, Windom. 

Helen L. Gugler, 89 passed away April 24, 2017 at the age of 89. Helen was born April 19, 1928 to Robert Lee and Bessie Adams Boggs.

Helen was proceeded in death by her parents and two brothers, Robert and John Boggs.

Survivors include husband, Duane Gugler; daughters, Sharon K. Cooper (Stevan) Chase, Kan.; Brenda “Angel” Kerr (Jim) Concordia, Kan.; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Margaret Martinitz Hutchison, Abilene, Kan.

The visitation is from 6:30-8 p.m., April 28 at the Londeen Funeral Chapel, Chapman, Kan.

Memorial service is at 10:30 a.m.,  April 29, at the Lyona United Methodist Church, 1850 Wolf Rd, Junction City, Kan.

Eldred Deverne Bruntzel, 90, passed away April 14, 2017, at Country Living of Larned.
He was born March 25, 1927, in LaCrosse, the son of Alfred Frederick and Mildred I. Ellis Bruntzel. He lived his early years in Rozel, moving to Ulysses in 1959, then moved back to Larned in 2011. He was an oil and gas distributer for AMCO.
He was of the Baptist faith and a member of the American Legion, Masons and a lifetime member of the VFW. He served in the United States Navy, where he received the victory medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.
On Aug. 8, 1946, he married Rosalyn Wanita Umberger in Larned. She survives.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Joyce Marie Klein, Salina, Jennifer Kay (Dr. Dennis) Kepka, Wilson; a sister, Sharon Price, Larned; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janell Rose Bruntzel, and a sister, JoAnn Simmons Selzer.

     Brad Boyle, 82, died Dec. 21, 2015 in Poway, Calif. His ashes were recently scattered at sea by the U.S. Navy. Brad graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1952 and, along with several other Ellsworth boys joined the military. After his service, Brad worked as a psychiatric technician and later fireman at Camarillo State Hospital. He was very proud of becoming an EMT.
     Brad is survived by his wife, Caryn, sister, Kay Albertson, and many family members.
     A memorial gathering will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 29, at 13436 Scot’s Way, Poway, Calif.

Patricia Ann Jones Graves, 82 of Hardtner, Kan., passed away April 12, 2017 at the Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital Long-Term Care Facility.

Pat was born May 4, 1934 at Alva, Okla. to Leo Augustine Jones and Margaret Elizabeth Brockman. She married Robert Eugene Graves, Sept. 1, 1953 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alva.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a sister; and a grandson.

She is survived by her eight children, including Mary (Dwayne) Turnbow of Geneseo; 21 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
 

Funeral was held April 17, 2017.

Evelyn Florene Estus Schroeder, 97, died April 20, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Society, Lyons.

Mrs. Schroeder was born Feb. 10, 1920, at Mansfield, Mo., to Homer Stanley and Nannie Mae Looper Estus.

She married Elmer Schroeder Aug. 18, 1938, at Rock Port, Mo. He passed away Dec. 5, 1995.

She was a member of the Geneseo Methodist Church, residing in Geneseo since 1938. She was a housewife.

Survivors include her son, Larry Schroeder, Cedar Point, Kan.; two daughters, Janice Schroeder O’Brien, Cottonwood Falls, Kan. and Phyllis Schroeder Hogg, Lyons, Kan.; three sisters, Doris Gill, Phelan, Calif., Edith Lohr, Rock Port Mo., and Jeanne Pitts, Leawood, Kan.; 12 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer; son, Duane Schroeder; four brothers, Roland, Paul George and Robert Estus; and a granddaughter, Tonya Schroeder Gardenier.

John Denton Montgomery, 86, died March 22, 2017, at the University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle.
Mr. Montgomery was born April 6, 1931, at Grand Island, Neb., to Mary Isabelle (Wright) and Paul Rothwell Montgomery.
He attended schools in Nebraska and Colorado before moving to Goodland, Kan. He attended Kansas State University, Manhattan, and served in the U.S. Air Force in the 1950s with the 42nd Recon Division as a navigator in Spangdalen, Germany, for 51/2 years. He received advanced degrees from Fort Hays State University and earned a Ph.D. from Iowa State University in 1980. Dr. Montgomery worked at Area Education Agency 6, Marshalltown, Iowa, as a school psychologist, director of early child intervention project and supervisor of psychological services. Upon his retirement in 1996, he worked a year for the U.S. Army in Kwajalean, Marshall Islands as school psychologist and clinical psychologist for the Kwajalean Hospital.

     Francesca “Frances” Josepha Svoboda, 95, passed away April 4, 2017 in Ellsworth. She was born in Ellsworth County on Sept. 20, 1921 to Havel Frank and Valentina Rose (Vopat) Soukup.
     Frances married Frank Svoboda on Jan. 25, 1966. Before their marriage, she worked as an registered nurse in Salina and was later a homemaker. She also enjoyed helping her husband, Frank on the farm. She was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Ellsworth.
     Frances is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; 2 sisters; and 3 brothers.
     Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday, April 9, at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
     Funeral mass is at 10 a.m., Monday, April 10, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Ellsworth, with burial following in the Ellsworth Memorial Cemetery.
