Ilene C. Munoz (1924-2017)

Ilene C. Munoz, 92, passed away Jan. 1, 2017 in Salina.
She was born June 29, 1924 in Lincoln, Kan. to Tont and Sylvia (McCormick) Morrison. Ilene married Angel Munoz in Abilene, Kan. on April 16, 1949. She was a long-time resident of Kanopolis and a cook at USD 327 in Ellsworth. She was a member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliary, St. Ignatius Altar Society, and the St. Ignatius Catholic Church.
Ilene is survived by her son, Bob Munoz of Kanopolis; daughter, Susan Rice (Bruce), of Salina; son, Charlie Munoz (Maria) of Port Orchard, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; 15 great- grandchildren; sister, Helen Eckelman of Missoula, Mt.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Angel; sons, David Munoz and Elmer Taylor; three sisters; three brothers; and close friend, Everett White.
The family would like to thank the Holiday Resort in Salina and family members, Charlie and Judi Munoz, for their care of Ilene.

Donald L. Ogburn (1934-2016)


Memorial Mass for Donald L. Ogburn, 82, rural Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 2, 2017 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
Mr. Ogburn died Dec. 28, 2016 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital with Phyllis and many of their children and grandchildren around him.
He was born Jan. 7, 1934 in Ellsworth, Kan. and is the son of Lloyd E. and Verna Margel Sauers Ogburn.
After graduating from Ellsworth High School in 1956, Mr. Ogburn joined the Navy and served for four years. After the military he attended training and become an air traffic controller. He retired from the FAA out of Olathe Air Traffic Control Center. Once retired, he looked forward to meeting with his coffee group and the air traffic controllers’ breakfast. Mr. Ogburn loved to hunt and fish and spending time with his family. He was also a Master Gardener and really enjoyed visiting with neighbors who stopped by to pick up sweet corn, asparagus and strawberries.

Leon W. Beagley (1942-2016)


Leon W. Beagley, 74, of Russell, Kan., passed away Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016 at Russell Regional Hospital in Russell.
Leon was born July 26, 1942 in Hutchinson, Kan., the son of William Edgar and Florence Gertrude (Rush) Beagley. He grew up on a farm near Geneseo, Kan. and attended country school. He then graduated from Geneseo High School. He worked a short time at the Lyons Salt Mine before enlisting. He served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam.  After his tour he returned to the Geneseo area.
Leon met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Margaret Marston on March 12, 1967 in Canton, Kan.  This union was blessed with two sons; David and Terry. They made their home in the Geneseo area.

John T. Ringle

     John T. Ringle, 68, Holyrood, passed away Thursday, Dec. 8, 2016. He was born April 2,1948,in Salina, Kan., to Jack and Ruth (Olson) Ringle.
     He married Michelle (Nice) in Holyrood on Aug. 14,1998.
     John worked at Holyrood Co-op for 13 years and was a truck driver for several different companies. He was a member of the Holyrood American Legion and served his country and the U.S. Army during Vietnam War.
     John is survived by his wife, Michelle Ringle of Holyrood; son, John T. Ringle Jr. of Holyrood; step-son, Alexander Gonzalez (Elizabeth) of Ellinwood; step-son, Aaron Gonzalez (Sarah) of Great Bend; and grandaughters, Alexandria and Quinn Gonzalez.
     He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
     Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2017 at Gypsum Hill Cemetery 2020 East Iron Avenue, Salina.

Albert A. "Popeye" Appel

     Albert A. “Popeye” Appel, 89, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016. He was born May 8, 1927 in Bushton, Kan., to Ethel (Baker) and Albert Adolph Appel.
     Albert married Constance Redding at the Salem Methodist Church near Bushton, on Feb. 28, 1955. He was a manager at different area Co-ops for many years, a member of the VFW and American Legion, and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ellsworth. He also served his country in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II.
     Albert is survived by his wife, Constance Appel of Ellsworth; son, Jon Appel (Sheri) of Manhattan; son, Adam Appel of Stillwater, Okla.; and grandchildren, Jared, Logan, Aaron, and Adylee.
     He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ethelyn and Myrtle; and brothers, Arlos and Elmer.
     Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 12 noon Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017, at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth.

Eugene "Gene" Neal Peterka

     Eugene “Gene” Neal Peterka, 79, passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2016 at Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kan,, surrounded by his family. He was born Aug. 26, 1937 on the family farm in Lincoln County, Kan. to the late Victor and Theresa (Farney) Peterka.  He grew up and attended the Margaret one room school house and Wilson High School. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy serving aboard several ships, his most memorable being the USS Midway.
     Gene was united in marriage to the love of his life, Lorene Small on Oct. 29, 1960, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson. They were blessed with four children, Kevin, Tom, Rhonda, and Sonya.

Duane Keith Schroeder (1942-2016)



Duane Keith Schroeder, 73, passed away Saturday, Dec. 24, 2016 in Salina. He was born Dec. 31, 1942 in Ellsworth County to Elmer and Evelyn (Estus) Schroeder.
  Duane lived most of his life in central Kansas. He worked most recently as a maintenance supervisor at National Beef in Dodge City. He also had various other jobs.
Duane is survived by daughters, Cindy Macmillan (Hugh) of Durham, N.C. and Amy Rogers (Curtis) of Lincoln, Neb.; sons, Pat Schroeder (Darci) of Ellsworth and Shawn Schroeder of Rangely, Colo.; mother, Evelyn Schroeder of Lyons; brother, Larry Schroeder of Cedar Point, Kan.; sisters, Phyllis Hogg (Micky) of Lyons and Jan O’Brien of Cottonwood Falls; former wife, Nancy Schroeder of Haven; step-children, Keith Nelson of Hutchinson, Kim Klassen of Council Bluffs, IA, Kristy McCall of Burrton, and Kelly Nelson of Pineville, Mo.; 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.

Orvetta R. Handlin (1931-2016)


Orvetta R. Handlin, 85, passed away Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016 in Ellsworth.
She was born Aug. 1, 1931 in Minneapolis, Kan. to Orville E. and Ruth L. (Harper) Brown.
Orvetta spent most of her working life as a secretary for various local businesses, including El-Kan, Larsen Chevrolet, the courthouse, and the Ellsworth Lumber Yard. She married William B. Handlin, Jr., Nov. 18, 1950, in Ellsworth. He survives her.
Orvetta is also survived by sons, Larry W. Handlin (Kris) of North Platte, Neb. and Timothy T. Handlin of Ellsworth; grandchildren, Justin Handlin (Lynn), Jeff Handlin (Amy), John Handlin (Stevie), Josh Handlin (Casey), and Tim Handlin (Cecelia); and great-grandchildren, Finnegan, Hudson, Amelia, Ella, Tristan, Zoe, and Cale.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at Parsons Funeral Home. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date.

Carolyn A. Evans (1940-2016)

Carolyn A. Evans, 76, passed away Dec. 21, 2016.
She was born Feb. 2, 1940 in Reno County, to Vera (Glover) and Harry Edwards.
Carolyn married Ernest Evans, Jr. on Oct. 1, 1956 in Haven, Kan. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church, Ellsworth.
Carolyn is survived by her son, Brett Evans (Mindy) of Hoisington; daughter, Angela Mardis of Pratt; sister, Peggy Green of Hutchinson; sister, Sue Patterson of Hutchinson; sister, Sally Oberle (Norman) of Ellsworth; three grandchildren, Rachel Mardis, Stacey Castle (Zac), and Michelle Cox (Mathis); and three great-grandchildren, Alexander James Caggiano, Silas Neil Castle, and Weston David Cox.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; and brothers, Bob and Bill Edwards.
The family would like to extend deep appreciation to Ken and Alice Robson for being so supportive to their family over the years.
