Dianne Long

     Dianne Long, 69, passed away Monday, Oct. 24, 2016 at Via Christi St. Francis Medical Center in Wichita, Kan. She was born Jan. 10, 1947 to Charles W. Rogers and Cecile Rogers.
     Dianne married Lawrence Long Jr. on Feb. 12, 1965. She was an avid baseball fan and loved the Kansas City Royals. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, she loved her pet cats. She was a secretary and bookkeeper for Quality Builders for over 20 years, she was a laundry supervisor at Good Samaritan in Ellsworth, Kan.
     She was preceded in death by her parents.
     Dianne is survived by her husband, Larry, of 52 years; her two children, Tammy Stuck, and Kelly Long; her brother, Bobby (Mary Jo) Gee;  two grandchildren, Brandon and Kandice Huffman; four great-grandchildren, Triggun, Khilles, Jaden, LeLand.
     Cremation has been chosen, private family services will be planned.

Iris Junior Hemry

     Iris Junior Hemry, 86, died Monday, Oct. 24, 2016 at Hospice House in Hutchinson.
     She was born Jan. 2, 1930 to Ira and Ethel Van Buskirk Ulrickson in rural Ellsworth County. A Lyons resident and former longtime Ellsworth County resident, she was a homemaker and Navy Wife. She was of the Protestant faith; former member or the Order of the Eastern Star. She sang in the Messiah at Bethany College in Lindsborg for several years, along with singing twice at Carnegie Hall.
     She married Jack M. Hemry Dec. 8, 1950 at Geneseo. He died July 25, 2012.
     She was preceded in death by son, Robert L. Hemry, four sisters and one brother.
     She is survived by daughter, Dianne M. Hemry, Geneseo; two sons, Jerald D. Hemry, Tucson, Ariz., John G. Hemry, Owings, Md,;  sister, Virginia Reeder, Bartow, Fl.; three grandchildren.
     Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 29, at Geneseo Cemetery, Geneseo, with burial to follow.

Cathlyn Sue Podlena (1955-2016)

Services for Cathlyn S. Podlena will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Wilson Cemetery.
Cathlyn Sue Podlena, 61, passed away Monday, Oct. 17, 2016 at her home in Kanopolis, Kan.
She was born Sept. 29, 1955 in Milwaukee, Wis. to Clifford Glenn and Frances Pauline (Brown) Popp.
Cathlyn is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Ross (Trenton) of Manhattan, Kan.; grandchildren, Abigail, Alison, and Kelton; sister, Carolyn Nondorf (Ben) of Wilson; brother, Allan Popp (Debra) of Grove, Okla.; step-sister, Michelle Jackson (Richard) of Salina; and longtime partner, Robert Munoz of Kanopolis.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth, is in charge of arrangements.

Patsy Jean (McCleary) Helus (1928-2016)

Patsy Jean (McCleary) Helus passed away Monday, Oct. 17, 2016 at the age of 88. She was born on May 22, 1928 in El Dorado, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her father, Claude McCleary, her mother, Judith Balk, her husband, Johnny, and daughter, Candy.

She is survived by her daughter, Kristi (Steve) Logue of Derby, and sons, Randy of Salina and Ron (Sherry) of Wamego. Also surviving are six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20, at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth, with family present from 6-8 p.m.

Funeral service is at 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 21 at the First Presbyterian Church, Ellsworth, with burial following in the Ellsworth Cemetery.

Cathlyn Sue Podlena (1955-2016)



Cathlyn Sue Podlena, 61, passed away Monday, Oct. 17, 2016 at her home in Kanopolis, Kan.

Ronald Dean Headley

     Ronald Dean Headley, 87, of Russell, Kan., and formerly of Ellsworth, Kan., passed away Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016, at his home in Russell.
     Ron was born Nov. 24, 1928 in Carneiro, Kan., the son of Lowell and Mary (Sneath) Headley. He grew up in Ellsworth County and attended local schools. He enlisted in the United States Army on Dec. 6, 1946, at Ft. Riley, Kan. He received the World War II victory medal and Army of occupation medal. After serving his country, he came back to Ellsworth and worked most of his adult life farming and ranching.
     He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Mary Ann Evans in 1976.  He loved being on the farm and in the fields and enjoyed spending most of his time outdoors doing chores around the farm and tending his crops and cattle.  Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his wife and family.

Darlene Ann Mattas

     Darlene Ann Mattas, 81, Wilson, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016 in Salina, Kan.
     Mattas was born July 19, 1935 in Gorham, Kan., to Alfonse and Silverina (Quint) Hammersmith.
     Mattas first husband, Francis John Befort, passed away in 1961. Her second husband, Ernest J. Mattas, Jr., passed away in 2007.
     Mattas was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, Francis and Ernest Jr., two infant brothers, Marvin and Martin, and an infant sister, Mary.
     Survivors include three daughters, Rosemary Anne Befort (Andre Zane) Shiever of Salina, Kan., Margaret Mae Befort Heart of Hays, Kan., and Bernadette (Jeff) Mattas Franks of Russell, Kan.; a brother, Al Hammersmith of Hutchinson, Kan.; a sister, Virginia Rathbun of Natoma, Kan., and five grandchildren.
     Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Foster’s Mortuary, Wilson. A vigil service with a Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 7 p.m.

Rachel L. Janssen (1942-2016)


Rachel L. Janssen, 74 passed away Oct. 2, 2016 at Salina Regional Health Center.
She was born on June 22, 1942 in Ellsworth to Herschel and Marian (Craig) Janssen. Rachel worked in medical records at the Ellsworth County Hospital. She was a member of Red Hats, enjoyed numerous Bible studies, and was very fond of helping with “Bible Alive” at her church. The things Rachel most enjoyed in life were spending time with her children and grandchildren, reading, and watching the Kansas City Chiefs.
Rachel was preceded in death by her parents.

Harold E. Koch

     Harold E. Koch, 87, Holyrood, Kan., passed away Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016, in Salina. He was born May 31, 1929, in the telephone office in Bushton, Kan., to Edward and Grace (Flannery) Koch.
     Harold married Betty Kemmerer, Feb. 19, 1950, in Great Bend, Kan. She survives him. Shortly after serving his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Harold and Betty returned to Kansas to work at his family’s business, The Bushton Telephone Co. Soon after that, they purchased the Holyrood Telephone Co. which they later incorporated into H&B Communications of Holyrood. Harold then served as co-owner and general manager of H&B Communications for nearly 30 years. He was a member of the Holyrood American Legion Post 200 and the Seventh Day Adventist church of Hutchinson. He also formerly served as the mayor of Holyrood for 20 years.

Richard D. ‘Dick’ Schreiber (1932-2016)

Richard D. “Dick” Schreiber, 84, Osborne, passed away Friday, Sept. 23, 2016 at Osborne County Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 26, 1932, to Fred and Edna Mowery Schreiber. Dick was a graduate of Osborne High School in the Class of 1950. He was called into the U.S. Army to serve in the Korean Conflict of 1951 through 1953. On his return, he went back to work beside his father in the welding shop.
On Jan. 7, 1965, he and Marvelene Lund Thornburg were married and made a home for her daughter, Donetta, and their son, Gary.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Lance Burch.
He is survived by is wife, Marvelene; daughter, Donetta; son, Gary and wife, Cecilia; grandsons, Ted Anderson, and wife Kari, of Halstead, and Cole and Lane Schreiber of Osborne; great-grandchildren, Malik, Lance and Kasody Anderson of Halstead and a host of friends.
