Two Central Plains High School basketball standouts will share the court again as members of the 2018 USA D-2 Women’s Basketball team, which will spend 10 days touring Brazil.

Taylor Rolfs, a junior guard at Fort Hays State University, and Reagan Phelan, a junior at Washburn University, are scheduled to join teammates from Central Missouri, Minnesota and Alabama in a fourgame series against professional clubs based around Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Peyton Lambeth was the overall and male teen winner of the Scout Spirit 5K Saturday, June 30, at Ellsworth. Lambeth’s time was 19:01.

Other top spots went to: Joni Schroeder, female teen winner 25:28; Laura Kyler, adult female winner, 22:33; and Andy Ridinger, adult male winner, 26:10.

The Saturday morning run is a popular part of the annual Fort Harker Days at Kanopolis. Sand volleyball also is a draw. Here are scenes from this past weekend’s event. At right, Joshua Rodriguez is on his way to the finish line with a time of 13:53 in the 2K.

Ronnie Tenbrink, Ellsworth Recreation Director, addresses summer baseball teams at Sunday’s hot dog feed at Preisker Park. The recreation department and the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter have teamed up for five years to take team photos and provide a free lunch to athletes, coaches and parents.
