It’s off to State for Ellsworth and Central Plains tennis teams

If you’re from Ellsworth or Central Plains, there should be plenty of familiar faces to see if you go to Wichita this weekend.

At 3-2-1A regionals Friday at Hesston, the top six singles and doubles teams qualified for State. That included teams from Ellsworth and Central Plains.

“[That’s] the first time EHS qualified all six players for State that I know about,” said veteran Bearcat coach Eric Anderson.

Ellsworth places second at home invitational

Ellsworth placed second Thursday, May 3, in the Ellsworth Invitational at the Ellsworth Municipal Golf Course.

The Bearcats had a team score of 189.

The Thomas More Prep-Marian boys golf team claimed first place with a score of 170.

In individual play, Chris Fitzgerald placed sixth with an adjusted score of 41.

Lady Bearcats post victories over Plainville

The Lady ‘Cats took two games from Plainville Friday, including one that went back and forth and ended 13-11 in Ellsworth’s favor.

There was plenty of action in the second game of the double header as the Lady ‘Cats collected 10 hits, two more than the Lady Cardinals.

Ellsworth captured the lead in the first inning as Kolby Davis singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run.

In the top of the fourth inning, Plainville tied the game at eight.

The Lady Cardinals scored five more runs in the fourth inning.

Ellsworth trailed 11-10 in the bottom of the fifth when an error scored two runs for the Lady ‘Cats.

Ellsworth brings home four firsts from Beloit relays

Three Ellsworth athletes came home this past weekend with four firstplace finishes in 3A-4A at the 78th annual Beloit Relays.

Freshman Shaylee Leiker placed first in the girls 100m and 200m dash. Seniors Remington Cravens was first in the triple jump and Darrell Gustin took the top place in the discus throw.

Oiler tennis team overcomes injury

Bouncing back from injury, the Central Plains Oilers are tapping inner resources as the regular season winds down.

No. 1 singles player Lawson Oeser returned for Monday’s quad tournament, following a foot stress fracture.

“We’re kind of excited to have him back,” said coach Gary Bittner. “He seems to be making progress every day.”

Bearcats on five-game winning streak

After struggling defensively for the better part of the season, the Bearcat baseball team put together five quality games in a row, winning one from Sacred Heart, two from Lincoln and two from Ellinwood.

Zac Schneider was the starting pitcher in the first game against Lincoln and pitched a complete game shutout allowing only three hits and one walk to get the win in Game 1.

‘Cats 2-8 at half-way point

Errors and walks continue to be the downfall of the Bearcat baseball team, according to coach Bernie Schulte.

Following a win against Beloit, the Bearcats have won one out of the last six games.

Against Ell-Saline on April 10, the Cardinals put up nine runs in the first inning and the Bearcats couldn’t overcome the lead, losing 10-19. Braden Schulte started the game and took the loss. The Bearcat pitching staff walked 15 batters and the defense committed six errors.

Central Plains and Wilson continue the tradition

The Central Plains girls and boys track teams took second and third places respectively April 17 at the annual Wilson Invitational at Russell.

It was the 59th year for the event.

The girls finished with 76 points, while the boys ended the day with 91, only a point behind second-place Otis-Bison.

The Wilson boys team finished eighth with 24 points and the Lady Dragons ended the day in 11th place with 10.

Ellsworth, Central Plains compete at local track meet

Ellsworth’s Shaylee Leiker placed first in the girls 100-meter and 400-meter dash April 10 at the Ellsworth Varsity Invitational Track Meet. Bearcat Darrell Gustin was first in the boys discus throw.

Central Plains’ Taylor Oeser received a first place in the girls javelin throw and another first went to Alex Barton in the boys 400 meter dash.

‘Cats keep their eyes on the prize

Age-old advice suggests that one’s opponent isn’t another player — but rather, oneself.

That’s one of the lessons Ellsworth coach Kevin Haxton tries to teach his varsity golfers. Coming out of this past week’s tournament in Minneapolis with a win, his players felt good. Ellsworth’s Chris Fitzgerald and Avery Haxton placed in the top spots, fourth and fifth respectively.
