Central Plains’ Barton captures high jump

Relay team runs to thirdplace in Class 2A State competition at Wichita

Alex Barton plans to attend Sterling College this fall on a basketball scholarship. But officials there also expect him to participate in track. That only makes sense after a senior year at Central Plains High School that included championships in both sports.

This spring, the Oilers captured their first Class 2A basketball championship ever. Then, this past week, Barton cleared 6-foot-6 to capture the 2A State high jump gold medal. The recognition came at the State track and field meet at Cessna Stadium in Wichita. In an interview after the meet, Barton said he knew going into the meet he had the highest jump of anyone in 2A. But he also knew unexpected things can happen at State. “I just knew I had to go out and do my best,” Barton said. His jump tied the 6-foot-6 personal best he reached at Ellinwood during the regular season.

The performance followed competition at the April 27 Beloit Relays, when Gustin tossed the discus 142’1 and the March 29 Fort Hays State University meet when he ended the day throwing the discus 131’2. Trailing Gustin in second place was Jaylen Pickle of Cimarron with a throw of 147’10.

It was a week Remington Cravens probably won’t forget. First there was graduation in the Ellsworth High School gymnasium and then — five days later — Cravens won the Class 3A triple jump gold medal at State competition in Wichita.

Cravens said it was his first love — basketball — that put him in the winner’s circle with a jump of 44-7.75

Lady ‘Cats end softball season

Article Image Alt Text

By the I-R staff

The Lady Bearcat softball team finished its 2018 season with a record of 13-9. However, there’s more to the story, said Coach Ken Cravens. “The nine losses all came to highly successful teams,” he said. The Lady ‘Cats fell twice to Southeast of Saline and twice to Republic County, both of which will compete at State; three times to the Lady Trojans of Beloit, who went undefeated in the North Central Kansas Activities Association and was defeated in the championship game at regionals by Southeast of Saline;.

The final two losses were to Salina’s Sacred Heart Lady Knights, who also ended their season in regional finals. “So all in all, we would have loved to have won more games and placed higher in the league standings, but our league was very talented and will represent in both the 3A and 2A state softball tournaments,” Cravens said.
