Lady ‘Cats place 5th at Lincoln tournament

The Ellsworth Lady Bearcats placed fifth in the Amos Morris-George Stephens Basketball tournament at Lincoln Friday after beating the Phillipsburg Panthers, 49-46, in overtime.

Ellsworth started the game well by ending the first quarter with a lead of 10-7. Then, in the second quarter, the Lady ‘Cats continued this lead by a small margin of 26-24.

Ellsworth’s Jordan Base shines in Lincoln tournament

The Ellsworth Bearcats placed fifth in the Amos Morris-George Stephens Basketball tournament in Lincoln Friday with a win over the Russell Broncos, 56-41.

The ‘Cats jumped to a big lead in the first quarter, allowing the Broncos only two points to their 13. Ellsworth would also gain an even larger advantage over Russell by the end of the first half, proving their defensive strength, with the final score going into the locker room, 25-12.

Lady Dragons sweep classic

TESCOTT — Wilson’s Lady Dragons never looked back after they put the first 2 points on the score board Friday night at the Tip-Off Classic at Tescott.

Their domination was evident in the final score 49-19, a number the Lady Dragons built quarter-by-quarter.

Lady Oilers take down Hoisington

The Lady Oilers kicked off their 2017-18 basketball season Friday night with an 88-23 victory over the Hoisington Cardinals.

Central Plains won the tip and no later than six seconds into the game returning starter Emily Ryan picked up her first foul with a charge. Not long after, Ryan was called for another foul which sent her to the sidelines.

‘Cats pin Southeast of Saline

The Ellsworth Bearcats won Southeast of Saline’s wrestling dual Friday with four wins to three for Southeast.

Ellsworth added four more open-match wins, giving the ‘Cats an overwhelming win with 46 points to the Trojans’ 18.

‘Cats kick off the season in style

The Ellsworth Bearcats took their first victory of the season in the home season opener against the Lyons Lions, by a score of 62-43, Friday.

The ‘Cats began their lead that would carry out to the end of the game, with a score of 25-13 by the end of the first quarter. In the second, they fought hard and held close to the Lions, who scored 14, while the ‘Cats scored 15. This brought the halftime score to 40-27.

Bolton joins Blazers for run

Josiah Bolton, a junior at Ellsworth Jr./Sr. High School and state cross country medalist, had the opportunity to run with the Brokaw Blazers Saturday, Nov. 18, in the 2017 Cross Country Coaches National Cross Country Youth Championships near Cincinnati, Ohio.

Bolton ran a personal best time of 17:35 and placed 42 out of 98 in the 15-16-year-old division. His team received a 3rd-place medal.

Lady Dragons look forward to a good 2017-18 season

This season has the potential for success written all over it for Wilson’s Lady Dragons. Head coach Rod Seehafer returns four of his top scorers from the 2016-17 team.

Seniors Katelyn Zelenka, 5’6 guard, averages 12 points per game, and seniors Riley Dietz, 5’7” guard, averages 11.

Young, larger group readies for grappler action

Ellsworth is still a young wrestling team; however, several Bearcats have another year of experience under the belts that should help as the season continues.

“We have a fairly larger group than in past years,” said head coach Steven Thorburn. “We have some freshmen that we expect to see great things from in the future and good Bearcat senior leadership.
