Lady Dragons move into 6th place

It was another good week for the Lady Dragons as Wilson notched two more wins, bringing its season record to 12-2.

The Lady Dragons are now ranked 6th in 1A-Div. 2 in the Kansas High School Coaches Poll.

Ellsworth varsity takes two

Remington Cravens scored 22 points and Jordan Base contributed 18 Friday night as the Ellsworth Bearcats defeated Southeast of Saline 65-45 at home.

The win brought the ‘Cats to 8-5 overall and 3-3 in the North Central Activities Association.

Years from now, St. John’s Jackie Rios will tell her family how she fearlessly defended the state’s best basketball player.

Rios’ denial defense forced four turnovers and limited Central Plains allstater Emily Ryan to 19 points, half her average.

Oilers take classic title

The No. 1 ranked in Class 2A Central Plains Oilers brought home the gold from the Mid-Winter Classic this past week at St. John with a 54-45 win over the Tigers.

The Oilers had to fight through the fierce competition provided by not only St. John, but also the Wichita Defenders and Nickerson Panthers. The Oilers will receive a one week rest before returning to play league opponent, the Otis-Bison Cougars, Jan. 30 at Otis.

Ellsworth boys also place 3rd

After a hard loss, the Bearcats were ready for a victory, which they captured during a game this past week against the Otis-Bison Cougars, placing them third in the Hoisington Winter Jam Tournament.

Remington Cravens was a major contributor to the Cats’ success, scoring a whopping 16 points in the first quarter, and 32 points total — the only Bearcat to reach double digits. Fouls also helped Ellsworth raise its score. The ‘Cats landed 14 of 16 free throws.

Lady Dragons take second in tournament

It was a fight to the wire for Wilson’s Lady Dragons this past week as they fell short by 6 points of winning the Northern Plains League Basketball Tournament, played at Lincoln and Tescott.

In Saturday’s championship game against Thunder Ridge, the Lady Dragons lost 34-40 after defeating Chase and St. John’s of Beloit/Tipton.

Lady ‘Cats post win

Girls — 62-39

It was all about the first quarter Friday night as the Lady Bearcats defeated the Sacred Heart Lady Knights, 62-39, in a league contest at Ellsworth.

Sacred Heart pretty much matched Ellsworth basket-forbasket in the final three quarters. The first quarter was a different story. The Lady ‘Cats jumped out to 5-0 and 16-2 leads behind 10 turnovers by the Lady Knights and only four shots from the field.

Oilers annihilate Victoria at home

Central Plains celebrated its winter homecoming by pounding conference rival Victoria Friday night at Claflin.

Both games — the boys and the girls — went the Oilers’ way soon after play began.

The girls left the court with a 95-29 win. The boys finished 80-27. Both teams are ranked No. 1 in 2A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association.

Central Plains defeats Macksville

The No. 1 ranked team in 2A, the Central Plains Oilers, traveled to Macksville to take on the Mustangs for the start to Central Prairie League action. The Oilers were victorious in the highly- anticipated match-up with a 64-54 win. Central Plains will face another league opponent this Friday against the Victoria Knights.
