Ellsworth Bearcat Zac Schneider wins the first of three matches Friday at regional competition at Hoisington to gave him a 3rd-place qualification for State Friday at Hays. He is pictured with Grant Murray of Norwich High School. Schneider, who competed in the 170-pound weight category, was the only Ellsworth wrestler to qualify for State. His run ended with eventual champion Sean Urban of Hoisington, who earlier this season claimed first place at the Ellsworth Tournament.

Oilers also win — twice

A road trip to Kinsley Friday resulted in the 19th Oiler victory of the season. The Oilers started hot with a blistering 14-0 run in the first 5 minutes of the first quarter. Kinsley found the basket at 2:38 in the first quarter, but the O-Men had an answer and a commanding 20-6 lead to end the first frame.

Lady Oilers post their 19th victory of season

The undefeated Lady Oilers added their 19th victory to the season with a road win over the Kinsley Lady Coyotes. At 6:39 sophomore Emily Ryan scored the first two points of the game with a pair of free throws. One minute later Ryan added two more free throws. Junior Avery Hurley added a 3-pointer and the Lady Oilers were on a 7-0

Wrestlers compete in league

Brendan Tripp of Ellsworth went 2-0 Thursday, Feb. 8, in the North Central Activities Association wrestling meet at Ellsworth. That earned him a 1st place and league championship in the 220-pound weight category.

Bearcat Zac Schneider ended the day with a 1-1 record in the 170-pound category. That earned him 2nd place behind Blaine Burks of Beloit.

Lady ‘Cats bury Buffs 41-21

Lady Bearcat, Kolby Davis, led her team with 15 points to their Homecoming victory against the Republic County Buffaloes Friday at Ellsworth.

In the first quarter, Lakyn Tenbrink scored her six points of the game, leading towards the Lady ‘Cats’ 11 for the quarter.

‘Cats post 49-34 win over Buffs

The Republic County Buffaloes tried to stay close in scoring to the Bearcats during their face off Friday, but coming back in the second half, they threw that away.

In the first quarter, every Ellsworth starting player made at least a 2- or 3-pointer to rack up the Cats’ score quick.

Little River Jr. High boys end winning season

The Little River Junior High boys finished their season 13-2 and were runners up in the Wheat State League Tournament.

Boys on the tournament team were Gabriel Walton, Braden Young, Braxton Lafferty, Grant Stephens, Carson Farmer, Rylan Konen, Allen Burrola, Evan Jay, Ty Herzog, Kyle Bruce, Kaden Schafer and Carter Holloway.

COLBY CROSS COUNTRY RECRUIT

Bearcat Maggie Allen plans to attend Colby Community College on a scholarship to run cross country and track. Maggie is a 4-year-letterman in cross country. She is also currently a 3-year-letterman in track. Maggie’s cross country achievements have been state qualifier (freshman), league honors (freshman, sophomore and senior), and gold medalist in the Hesston Swather Senior Girls race (1A, 2A, 3A) 2017. Maggie’s track and field achievements are 4x800 meter relay (junior and senior years) and 4x800 league champions (junior). Maggie is a USATF 4x800 All-American (2017) running with the Kansas Flyers Track Club.

Ellsworth boys pounce on Beloit; Base leads

For the first time in 21 years, the Ellsworth Bearcats defeated the Beloit Trojans in their Homecoming game Friday.

The score went back-and-forth and was close between the teams the entire game, with Ellsworth leading scoring 15-13 in the first half but behind 25-27 in the second.

Wilson falls short against St. John’s

Three Lady Dragon players were in double digits Friday night, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the shooting of the St. John’s Beloit/Tipton girls during Wilson King and Queen of Courts activities at Wilson.

The final score was 50-60 with Wilson’s Katie Zelenka contributing 18 points and one rebound, Riley Dietz with 16 points and 4 rebounds and Kaleigh Hanzlick with 11 points and 7 rebounds.
