The Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Daddy/Daughter Dance Feb. 18 at Ellsworth’s American Legion building. The girls were treated to the option of having their hair and makeup done prior to the dance. Around 170 guests attended.

Ludwig ‘Lud’ Bezemek, former Ellsworth resident and longtime community volunteer from El Paso, Texas, was selected by the City of El Paso for the 2016 Outstanding Star on the Mountain award. This award was given for his volunteer service to the community and to the youth of El Paso. Bezemek also received a special recognition medal for his fund raising support of Childhood Cancer Research and the National Alzheimer’s Association.

One houseplant that I have always loved, but never been able to master is the African Violet. One of my horticulture goals for 2017 is to get one to grow, bloom, and stay healthy for the year. Here are some things to think about when growing African Violets:

• Soil Mix and Container.

African violets require a soil mix that is well-drained. Commercially prepared packaged soil mixtures are available for African violets. Excellent plants can be grown in mixtures containing equal parts (by volume) of soil, peat and horticultural-grade perlite. Clay or plastic containers are both satisfactory, but choose a pot with drainage holes.

Even though the news might indicate otherwise, the best information available indicates, in general, couples and families are doing reasonably well. What makes a successful family? The answer is in the strength of the relationship rather than the structure of the family.

A basic tenet of 4-H is experiential learning — learning by doing. The learning in 4-H goes far beyond understanding how to measure a cup of flour or wash a calf. The ability to present in front of others, seeing a project through to the end and assembling a set of records are the true lessons of 4-H. While in Denver in mid-January for the National Western Stock Show, I was consistently impressed when meeting 4-H and FFA students by their polite and friendly manner and appropriate attire.
