The Pencil Parable

The story I want to tell is that of a pencil, about to venture out into the great big world. Before the pencil took off on his journey, the pencil maker had five things he would need to know before he set out.
 
1. You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in someone’s hand.

Wilson Winners 4-H

The Wilson Winners 4-H Club met Oct. 24 at Camp Kuck. Roll call was “Your favorite season.” Maggie Withers led the club in greeting new members. Hallie Thielen showed how to make roasted pumpkin seeds.

Christmas events planned

The Christmas season is drawing closer by the week and several local holiday events are planned. They are: Operation Christmas Child The national collection week for this year’s Operation Christmas Child is Monday, Nov. 16, through Monday, Nov. 23. Paula (Svaty) Gray is in her second year as coordinator of the collection drive. She took over last year from longtime coordinator Nancy Stonebraker. “It was a little scary to step into, but we’ve got an amazing group that brought in way more boxes than normal,” Gray said. “Where I might have entered the week stressed out, it was a fantastic week. I can’t say I completely filled Nancy’s shoes, but it was a fun experience.”

Turkey and Dressing

After a year’s absence, the annual Community Thanksgiving Day dinner will be served from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 26, at the Ellsworth Senior Center. “I feel very optimistic about it,” said organizer Pauline Zvolanek of Ellsworth during a recent interview with the Independent-Reporter. “It’s coming together just fine. We know what food we’re going to have to purchase and how much — we’ve gotten everything pretty much together.”

Area Clubs

Daughters of Isabella St. Francis Circle 232
 
After a social and potluck given by the Knights of Columbus and D of I St. Francis Circle 232, regent Irene Werth called the meeting to order Oct. 13 and Chaplain Father Matt led us in prayer. It was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. The opening Ode was read, followed with spiritual activity by Judy Soukup. Roll call was taken by the recording secretary, there were 13 officers and the Chaplain Fr. Matt present. We have 65 members. St. Charles Circle 287 invited us to officer installation Sunday, Oct. 18, at the Gorham Senior Citizen Center. Several officers will meet at church to drive over.

Wedding Brummer-Siemsen

Melanie Brummer and Darren Siemsen were united in marriage Sept. 5, 2015, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Tipton. Father Daryl Olmstead officiated. Parents of the couple are Lonnie and Mary Brummer of Tipton, and Steven and Sherry Siemsen of Holyrood. Grandparents of the bride are Leon and Joan Lutgen and Victor and Betty Brummer. Grandparents of the groom are Judy Siemsen and the late Vernon and Lavina (Mae) Klima, Robert Siemsen, and Jo Ann Siemsen.
