Leadership abilities lead to action

Last year at this time, the Midway Extension District was happy to partner with Barton County Extension Council in presenting the Leadership Boot Camp! This day long activity worked to build leadership skills in the young people of our community. Since that time, Midway District has had strong Junior Leader’s programs that have been working to offer the young people of our communities opportunities to learn new skills and information, led by local volunteers and community members.

Melva Boxberger will celebrate her 90th birthday April 4. She was born April 4, 1926 — the oldest of three girls — on the family farm to Carl and Minnie (Borell) Heinze. Her sisters are Ellen Hanzlicek of Wilson and the late Elvera Goad, who lived in Aurora, Colo.

Competitiveness of marketplace evaluated by six-state ACA study

TOPEKA — The Brookings Institution has released a report on six states — including Kansas — which evaluated the competitiveness of the health insurance marketplaces created by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Kansas was chosen for the study because it managed to attract four insurance companies in 2014 to compete in the marketplace, even though it is a mostly rural state.

Dorrance Homemakers FCE met for lunch Jan. 19 at Vintage Place. Jan Bachar, Joyce Langhofer and Marie Sloan gave the flag salute and KAFCE. Minutes and treasurer’s report were given. Six books were read, recycling, stamps, tabs, and coupons were collected. Volunteer hours reported were three hours and 25 minutes.

Ellsworth FFA member Skylar Dolezal is auctioned off for eight hours of labor by auctioneer Grant Glaser. Above right, the work auction raised $4,000 to help fund Ellsworth FFA activities during the school year.
