Marquette City Council

The regular monthly meeting of the Marquette city council ended Tuesday, March 12, with the immediate release from employment of city clerk Chendra Mitchell.

Mayor Rusty Young, members of the council and city attorney Patrick Hoffman offered no comment when asked the reason for Mitchell’s release from employment.

Messiah Festival announces theme

The Messiah Festival of the Arts proudly announces the major concert events and theme for its 2019 season. This year’s Festival is titled Legacy, and will feature a wide variety of art, music and theatrical events during the 10-day schedule beginning April 11 and continuing through Easter Sunday, April 21.

In honor of Lindsborg’s 150th Anniversary Celebration, this year’s Palm Sunday event will highlight Bethany’s home communities. “A Celebration of the Smoky Valley” will feature the Bethany Oratorio Society and students from Salina Central High School, Southeast of Saline High School, Smoky Valley High School, and Inman High School. The performance will feature students from area high schools and the 300 member Bethany Oratorio Society. Selections will include, “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” arranged by Mack Wilberg, “I Was Glad When They Said Unto Me” by Hubert Parry, and “M.L.K.” originally performed by U2 and arranged for choir by Bob Chilcot.

Marquette Team finishes strong

The Marquette preschool, kindergarten and first grade basketball team finished their 2019 season after learning skills and playing four games. The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education of Unified School District 444 was held in the Little River Jr./Sr. High School Commons at Little River Monday, Feb. 11. Board members present were Cory Dieball, Austin Neufeld, Doug Peters, Andrew Porter, Jackie Schafer, Zane Zahradnik and Susan Zeller.

MCCF Match Day March 6

The sixth annual McPherson County Community Foundation Match Day is from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 6. The Foundation is offering up to $60,000 in matching funds for the contributions given to one of 32 participating organizations. Here’s how Match Day works:

• The match pool is divided proportionally to the total amount raised on March 6. For example, if a total of $100,000 is raised and an organization receives 10% of the total donations, they will receive $6,000 to use for immediate needs or add to the endowment fund. ($12,000 max per organization.)

Sewing Group Up and Stitching

Members of the sewing and crafts group meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every other Wednesday at the Marquette Senior Center. The group, started by Janis Larson, bring their projects and work together. Larson has supplied five sewing machines for the group’s use. She encourages anyone who is working on a craft or sewing project to join the group. Larson is currently looking into the possibility of offering sewing classes for young people this summer. Left, Lee Olson sets to work on a fleece throw.

City puts new police vehicle into service

The city of Marquette purchased a 2015 Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicle to replace the 2008 Ford Crown Victoria that has been in use since 2013. The new care hit the streets Feb. 16.

The city of Marquette has purchased a used police car to replace the one that has been in use since 2013.

The city’s former police car, a 2008 Ford Crown Victoria, was experiencing numerous mechanical issues, with over $2,200 spent for repairs in 2018 alone.
