Mr. and Mrs. Larry Jacobs, Kathy and Bret, Jewell, visited a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Alstatt. Danny Jacobs and Kim McIntyre, Jewell, visited on Sunday.

Dora Tremblay, Hill City, visited Friday through Monday with her daughter, Mrs. Robert Larson, Mr. Larson and family. She also visited with Mr. and Mrs. Danny Morel and Nicky.

Mrs. Ione Hamlet, Lisa and Diane of Lexington, Mass., are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Lindstrom. They came to Marquette for the funeral service of Mrs. Hamlet’s aunt, Mrs. George Lindstrom.

The Marquette City Council accepted the resignation of city employee Hollie Krause at its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, Feb. 12.

Krause, who was employed by the city as recreation director, reserve police officer and grounds keeper for 14 years, handed Mayor Rusty Young her resignation letter during the employee reports portion of the meeting. Council members handed the letter around, but didn’t read the contents aloud.

Krause verbally gave no reason for her resignation, which was to take effect immediately. Krause’s only comment was,“It was a decision I had to make for myself.”

The Marquette Learning Center opened Monday, Jan. 28 and the director and board couldn’t be happier.

“Things are going smoothly,” said director Chelsea Graber.

The center currently serves 21 children, ages 4 weeks to 10 years, and has spaces available for those interested in enrolling their children.

Employees of the center are Christina Durbin, infants; Rebecca Dankenbring, toddlers; Morgan Willems, 2-year olds; Audrey Seeley, preschoolers; Samantha Caruthers, infants and toddlers; Brandy Brady, floater; Hollie Krause, after school care; and Rebecca Ratzlaff, floater.

The Marquette City Council approved the purchase of a police vehicle along with a warranty at a special meeting Tuesday, Jan. 29. at City Hall.

Council members present were Megan Dauer, Bill Nickel, Max Buffington and Mayor Rusty Young.

John and Sandra Myers woke up Friday morning, Jan. 25 to a situation that no one wants to deal with — their home at 117 S. Jackson Street in Marquette was on fire.

The Marquette Fire Department, along with EMS units from both Marquette and McPherson, as well as the Marquette Police Department, responded at 7:55 a.m. to a call from the Myers.

Tuesday, Jan. 22

To say the motion made at the end of the Smoky Valley USD 400 meeting caught this reporter by complete surprise would be quite an understatement.

A motion to accept, with great regret, Bill Nelson’s request for his resignation at the end of the current school year was approved. It is not known what Mr. Nelson will be doing following his resignation but we have been told that he has several options that he is still considering.

At the same time, Ky Swisher was chosen as the new Principal at SVHS beginning with the 2019-20 school year and Garrett Scritchfield will be moving over from his Smoky Valley Middle School Principal position to be the new Vice-Principal and Activities Director at the high school.
