The staff and residents of Riverview Estates have something to cheer about at the beginning of 2019. They passed their annual health inspection given by the state of Kansas with no deficiencies.

According to Riverview director Courtney Bailey, the state surveyors arrived in Marquette at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26 unannounced, as is their practice. They spent four days inspecting facilities, watching staff and asking questions, with the inspection ending Wednesday, Jan. 2.

Snacking is as much a holiday tradition as turkey, tree lights, parties and shopping.

Those heaping plates of treats rarely provide healthy options, but few people complain, at least not until the New Year, when they realize they gained a few extra pounds.

Actually, though, a healthy holiday alternative might have been there all along, just ignored because of the more enticing sugary treats surrounding it. Many snack trays include healthy nuts of various kinds (after all, this is the season of the nutcracker), but data shows that the typical American is more apt to reach for cookies, candy and chips. And it’s not just a seasonal thing: six out of 10 Americans don’t eat any nuts on a given day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

City Council change

Due to the New Year holiday, the Marquette City Council will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15 at City Hall.

Law enforcement agencies across the nation are joining forces over the holidays to remind drivers it’s deadly, dangerous and illegal to drive under the influence of illegal drugs, alcohol and some prescription drugs.

More than 150 Kansas law enforcement agencies will be extra vigilant to spot impaired drivers as part of the national enforcement campaign that runs Dec. 21-31.

“The period between Christmas and New Year’s Day is one of the most dangerous times of the year to be on the road,” said Chris Bortz, Kansas Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Program Manager.“Too often while celebrating over the holidays impaired drivers get behind the wheel, and it’s never OK to drive impaired.”

The McPherson County Historical Society will sponsor a program at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5 at the McPherson Museum and Arts Foundation, 1111 E. Kansas Ave, McPherson entitled The Cherokee Trail in Kansas.

Speaker Brian Stucky, President of the Friends of the Cherokee Trail, Kansas, will illustrate the history of a well-documented but not well known 1849 gold rush trail, beginning in Arkansas and Oklahoma, coming up into Kansas, joining the Santa Fe Trail one mile east and two miles south of Galva. From there, it passed through Colorado, Wyoming, and into California. Members of the group live in Galva, Goessel, Whitewater, El Dorado, Wichita, Winfield and Arkansas.

To address the nationwide shortages in the nursing field, Lindsborg Community Hospital and Bethany Home will again offer the Scholarship CNA Training classes in conjunction with Hutchinson Community College. Four summer sessions are available with each session limited to 12 students. Dates are May 13-31, May 31-June 19, June 19-July 9, and July 9-July 26.

One member of a McPherson County charitable organization was so impressed with the graciousness of CNAs during a hospital stay that he initiated the sponsorship of the local CNA classes in 2002. The charitable organization hopes to equip students with the skills needed to secure viable employment and to encourage students to pursue healthcare careers. To date over 823 students have graduated included some who are currently in the health industry locally.

The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education of Unified School District 444 was held Monday, Dec. 10, at the Windom Elementary School.

Prices paid for grain at MKC, Marquette, at the end of the business day Wednesday, Dec. 26 were: Wheat, bu. — $4.46, down 22 cents from Dec. 14. Milo, bu. — $2.99, down 9 cents. Soybeans, bu. — $7.55, down 22 cents. Corn, bu. — $3.19, down 12 cents.

MKC owns and operates grain facilities in about 40 locations, including Marquette and Lindsborg. The company is headquartered in Moundridge.
