The Art Room, Marquette’s public art studio, located in the old Marquette Elementary School, recently received a grant from the Smoky Valley Community Foundation in the amount of $2,966 to purchase needed items to provide a safe and functional space for a variety of community arts and crafts classes.

Carol Baker, one of the organizers of the Art Room, applied for the grant Oct. 15. The money was received the beginning of December.

Funeral services for James “Jim” P. Bell, age 68 of Beloit, were Thursday, Jan. 17 at the St. John’s Catholic Church. Mr. Bell died Sunday, Jan. 13, at the Mitchell County Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of the home; sons, Josh Bell of Beloit and Troy Baxter of South Haven, Miss.; daughter, Charissa Brummer of Beloit; brother, John of Concordia; sister, Mary Heidrick of Colorado Springs, Colo.; brother-in-law, Gordon Eller of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; sister-in-law, Janet Specht of Beloit; and 12 grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the St. John’s Cemetery Association. Roberts Family Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

The Marquette City Council, minus Megan Dauer, met Tuesday, Jan. 8 for their regular monthly meeting.

Public turnout was light, with only a handful of people present.

Fred Peterson asked councilman Dixon Johnson the results of a recent visit from several people connected with a company that is interested in locating a hydroponic vegetable growing operation in Marquette. Johnson reported that four people looked at locations. He asked the group about their water needs for the growing operation and was told the water is recycled and used again and again, lowering the need for great quantities of water.

The Marquette Lions Club hosted a New Year’s Eve spaghetti supper at the Riverview Estates Multi-Purpose Room that was attended by many from the area.

The Lions served spaghetti with meaty marinara sauce, garlic bread, tossed salad, dessert and a choice of tea or water. There was a free-will donation.

The Marquette Learning Center is almost a reality, according to director Chelsea Graber.

The MLC, located in a portion of the old Marquette Elementary School, is expected to open this month, with 38 children pre-enrolled and nine staff members hired. The inspections are being completed and the toys and furniture have been unpacked and prepared.

According to Graber, the facility recently had its boiler inspection. After repairs are made to the boiler which will take about a week, the next step will be for the state fire marshall to inspect and approve the premises so MLC can receive its permit to occupy the building.
