Kelly takes the Democratic nomination for Governor

Despite a strong showing in his old Kansas House district, Ellsworth County’s Josh Svaty lost the democratic nomination for governor in Tuesday’s primary election to state senator Laura Kelly of Topeka.

At a little after 9 p.m. Kelly had almost 52 percent of the votes with the eastern counties and even counties in the rural western counties — normally considered a Svaty stronghold — in her win column.

Ellsworth native tapped for job in administration

An Ellsworth native is awaiting U.S. Senate confirmation following a nomination this past week by President Trump to become his topranking science and technology policy adviser.

Kelvin Droegemeier, a meteorologist and public official, was named as the president’s choice to head the Office of Science and Technology Policy — a vital branch of the White House, which counsels the president and his cabinet on the scientific aspects of issues ranging from security and the economy to health and the environment.

State throws another curve ball at school district

HOLYROOD — What began as a discussion by members of the Central Plains USD 112 board on the relationship between a proposed bond election and four core board goals soon moved to a discussion of financial and budget concerns.

Even the spectre of possibly — NOT probably — closing a school in the district was raised.

“I think we need to go back to Goal B, and that is to operate within a fiscally responsible budget,” said Michelle Brokes, board president, during the meeting at Central Plains Elementary School at Holyrood.

Helping Others

In 2017, the Post Rock Jaycees donated an estimated $24,000 to organizations across Ellsworth County.

That would be a huge accomplishment for any group, but it’s especially significant when you consider the Jaycees membership — they’re all inmates at the Ellsworth

Budget mood lightens

The Kansas budget is no longer on life support; however, one state lawmaker added several words of caution to the recovery talk Saturday during the annual coffee and kolaches session at the Wilson After Harvest Czech Festival.

Rep. Steven Johnson, R-Assaria, repeated a lesson he learned from his father — “You can’t feed cattle on promises.”

Swimmers finish lessons with thanks to former Marquette mayor

The Marquette City Pool began session 2 swimming lessons Monday, July 16.

The Level 1 class was taught by Cassidy Gerlach and Kayla Fox.

Students were Logan Myers, Raylyn Farris, Andrew Peterson, Cruise Oakley and Kolt Seely.
