Pastor Luke Brown knows the power of four paws. That somewhere below the soft, golden fur lies a compassionate soul hoping to heal a broken heart and spread a message of faith.

To offer hope when all seems lost.

And it all starts with a hug.

For nearly a year, the congregation at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Ellsworth has been raising money to acquire a dog through the Lutheran Church Charities K-9 Comfort Dog ministry.

A card game turns into a fist fight Saturday during Ellsworth’s annual re-enactment of the shooting of Sheriff Whitney at the annual Cowtown Days celebration. The popular Cowtown staple tells the story of the events leading up to the death of the famous Ellsworth lawman in 1873.

KANOPOLIS — One by one, re-enactors walked to the front porch of the Fort Harker Commanding Officers Quarters Saturday and re-created a day 150 years ago when 30 men signed up with the U.S. Army as Forsyth Scouts.

“Name?” asked Col. Inman, the Fort Harker quartermaster, who was seated at a table to greet the men as they stepped on the porch.

“John Haley,” replied one re-enactor in the character of his Scout.

When asked to describe Saturday’s Cowtown Days celebration in Ellsworth, Cowtown committee officials and others involved in the celebration used two words again and again — tradition and history.

“I think Cowtown is a great tradition and celebration of the historical side of Ellsworth,” said Tami McGreevy, executive director of the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce. “It means a lot to keep that history alive and it means a lot to keep this festival going. I’m really glad the chamber could pick it up this year and run with it.”

U. S. Rep. Roger Marshall, (R-Great Bend), had more on his mind than just cowboys, cattle and six-shooters Saturday when he offered a legislative update during Ellsworth’s Cowtown Days celebration.

During an interview with the Independent- Reporter before a community coffee at the Ellsworth County Historical Society’s new Hodgden House Museum Complex research center, Marshall talked tariffs, veterans affairs and the farm bill.

Veronica Kyler remembers a time several years ago working in the take-out building during the St. Ignatius of Loyola’s annual Fiesta.

The atmosphere was often hot and hectic as volunteers quickly dished up carryout items for customers standing in line to get their fix for authentic, handmade Mexican food.
