Board members consider options for grade school

Members of the Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo USD 327 board of education were presented with three options for the improvement of Ellsworth Elementary School at their regular monthly meeting Monday, but made no decision at this time about which choice would be the best for the district in both the short- and long-term.

After the approval of the agenda, the board, meeting in the high school common, recognized:

• Kansas Honors Program top 10 percent of class: Jeanae Brungardt, Riann Pruitt, Emma Spachek and Jaxson Windholz.

It didn’t take a public meeting for Ellsworth and Ellsworth County residents to measure the reactions of local residents to the possibility of pursuing a chicken processing plant.

Following a week of telephone calls to their homes, Ellsworth County commissioners voted Monday morning to cancel an Oct. 17 meeting, where they planned to discuss the plant and listen to the opinions of residents on the project.

When Ellsworth Bearcats head coach Josh Homolka was hired earlier this year, he really didn’t intend on shaking things up or making any radical changes on the field.

But this season, Homolka has done just that by leading the local high school football team to its first playoff appearance since 1987.

County moves forward with rec district

By a vote of 2-1, Ellsworth County commissioners Monday approved the creation of a recreation district in a small portion of Ellsworth County and in the Marquette area of McPherson County.

McPherson County commissioners have already signed off on the plan.

As Ron Svaty looks back over his 75 years, he realizes that many of the significant events in his life have happened abruptly and with little warning.

On his way to taking advantage of a football scholarship at Washburn University, Kansas State University offered him a free four-year ride to the school. Svaty immediately abandoned football and headed for Manhattan.

Officials seek input for chicken plant

Ellsworth County commissioners Monday morning set a date of Tuesday, Oct. 17, for a public meeting to discuss the possibility of pursuing a Tyson chicken processing plant. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the American Legion building.

Officials met with Ellsworth city administrator Scott Moore and Dan Mount, who represented the regional Post Rock Rural Water District, based in Ellsworth.

Lorraine probe continues

LORRAINE — Kevin L. Wagner, 55, of Bushton died Saturday in a Wichita hospital after receiving a head injury Thursday, Sept. 28, during an altercation in Lorraine, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation reported Monday afternoon. The preliminary autopsy report indicated he died from blunt force trauma.

Meanwhile, the KBI and the Ellsworth County Sheriff ’s Office probe into last Thursday’s aggravated battery in Lorraine continues. At this time no arrests have been made connected to this incident and the investigation is ongoing, according to a KBI news release. No further information will be released at this time.

Hot, dry days wilt fall crops

Clinton Laflin, the livestock production specialist for the Midway Extension District in Ellsworth and Russell counties, scratches his head when he talks about this year’s local corn crop and yields.

“I feel like it’s been an odd couple of months from a temperature aspect,” he said in a recent interview with the Independent-Reporter. “August was fairly mild. But in September, we’ve had more heat. That’s been something a lot of people didn’t expect.”

Marquette city candidates speak at forum

As a rainy day faded into a drizzly evening, a suprisingly large crowd gathered at the Marquette United Methodist Church Monday evening, Sept. 25, to get to know more about this year’s candidates for the Marquette mayoral and city council positions.

The candidate’s forum, sponsored by the Marquette Lions Club, began at 7:15 p.m. in the church basement. Lions Club president Kerry Lindh welcomed the crowd that was assembled and introduced each of the candidates in alphabetical order.
