PRESS RELEASE REFERENCE THE DEVELOPMENTS IN THE

PROSECUTION OF TWO (2) JUVENILES WHO ARE PART OF THE

GREAT BEND HIGH SCHOOL BUS INCIDENTS

 

            On May 31, 2016, Connor Furrey, age 17, of Great Bend, Kansas, was convicted of a Class “B” misdemeanor battery in Ellsworth County District Court Case 2016-JV-04. Sentencing has been set for 2:00 P.M. on July 5, 2016. Mr. Furrey will remain free on bond until sentencing.

Vintage in the Valley is June 4 at Marquette

It has rolled around to that time of year again and the fourth annual Vintage in the Valley is just a few short days away. This year’s event will be from 8 to 3 p.m. Saturday June 4, on the beautiful main block of Washington Street in downtown Marquette.

Meals target students

Several Ellsworth County churches will join together this summer to provide at least one nutritional meal to any child ages 18 and younger — no questions asked. Pastor Amy Jo Hawley of the First Presbyterian Church will oversee the first year of the Ellsworth County Summer Food Program, which consists of representatives from several local and county churches. The goal is to provide students with at least one meal Monday through Friday between June 13 and Aug. 5.

Wheat expected to end season on an up note

This past week’s Ellsworth County wheat tour showcased two wheat crops — one that was treated for stripe rust and the other that was left to fend for itself. Michelle Buchanan, agronomy and horticulture agent for the Midway Extension District, thinks the difference in yields — especially in varieties susceptible to the disease — could be as much as 40 percent.

Members of Ellsworth’s Class of 2016 officially ended their careers as high school students during their weekend commencement service. Friends and families came out in droves Sunday to support them as they took their final steps as seniors .

Enjoy this weekend of plenty in Marquette

American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Day will start off Memorial Day weekend activities in Marquette. Area Boy Scouts and youth will go door to door delivering the red crepe paper poppies at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 28. At 6 p.m. the Marquette School Alumni Banquet will be in the gym at the school. The Class of 1978 is in charge this year so if you plan a reunion and need a special table at the banquet, call Cheryl Anderson, (620) 755-1048, or Brenda Graham, (785) 546-2439, members of the ‘78 Class. Classes of 1961, 1946, 1966 and 1976 have reserved tables at the Alumni Banquet.
