Always a summer treat, fireflies light up the night sky beneath the Milky Way like Fourth of July fireworks on the Elkhorn Creek northeast of Ellsworth. Have a happy and safe Independence Day from the staff at the I-R./I-R Photo by Mark McCoy
Ellsworth’s Allan Grothusen was cutting wheat on the ridge overseeing his farmstead June 23 with an eye on the weather. It was a relatively cool day for north-central Kansas, with overcast skies and temperatures hovering at about 80 degree after days of 100-plus degree heat, but high humidity and a lack of wind made the harvest field muggy and sticky to the skin.
