Campbell reflects on time as police chief

By LINDA MOWERY-DENNING

Maverick Campbell leaves Ellsworth proud of the accomplishments his department made in the more than 17 months he served as chief — and wishing he could take his officers with him to his new job in Texas. “I’m proudest of my staff. If I could take my entire department with me, I’d do it,” said Campbell, whose final day as Ellsworth police chief was June 8. “They’re just a great group.”

(Editors Note: The following tells a story by Fred Peterson who was the Marquette city clerk for 17 1/2 years. He said he has been carrying the events of this day with him for 30 years and thought it was time to share them.)

On June 8, 1986, Geneva Peterson, Fred Peterson’s mother, wrote in her diary, “Fred almost got killed.” And now for the rest of the story.

The first load of wheat in Ellsworth County was delivered to the Ellsworth Co-op elevator in Holyrood Saturday at 5:20 p.m.

With harvest underway, motorists should take extra caution on the county’s roads as farmers and custom cutters move their large machinery to reap the harvest.
