Foundation awards fall grants

Ellsworth County’s Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation has awarded more than $7,000 in grants for local projects. They are: • $250 to the Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo School District for special education technology. • $1,500 to the Ellsworth County Medical Center Auxiliary for the purchase of a new tread mill for the Wellness Center.

Local farmers ponder joining corn suit

Only four corn producers showed up this past week for an informational meeting at City Saundries on al Lawsuit against the Swiss-owned Syngenta, the world's largest seed company. Ellsworth attorney Patrick Hoffman said that was just the way he wanted it  — to preview his talk on the lawsuit in front of small groups before moving on to bigger venues.

Two killed in Colorado airplane crash

     A 36-year-old Holyrood man, Jared Langston, and a 41-year-old Lyons man, Ben Bates, were killed Oct. 13 in an airplane crash in Weld County, Colo.
     According to press reports, Langston was piloting the Beechcraft model 35G at the time of the crash. He was a self-employed pilot and served in the U.S. Air Force.
     Bates was bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Great Bend.

Brownback visits Ellsworth Correctional Facility

      Gov. Sam Brownback praised the relationship between Ellsworth and the Ellsworth Correctional Facility during a brief visit Wednesday afternoon.
     “The community of Ellsworth and this area has long supported this facility in a great way and I appreciate that,” Brownback said. “It shows what you’ve got done.”
     Brownback also commented on the possibility of returning the housing program to ECF and pay increases for state correctional officers.

Imagine flying a 3,000-pound, 250-horsepower airplane mere feet off the ground in excess of 100 miles-per-hour. Brad Fitchett, an aerial applicator with Wayne’s Ag Aviation of Ellsworth doesn’t have to imagine — for him it’s routine.
