The Lady Bearcats volleyball team kept the momentum going Saturday, taking second place at its own Ellsworth Invitational tournament.

Ellsworth started the tournament by facing off against Ellinwood, a team the Lady ‘Cats played Aug. 30. While Ellsworth just edged out Ellinwood 25-22 in its first set, it only took one more to defeat the Lady Eagles 25-18.

Since 2014, the showdown between 8-Man and Central Prairie League powers Central Plains and Victoria has been an early-season tradition. Last year, the Knights held the Oilers to a single touchdown in a 34-8 win to open the season. Friday night Central Plains got its redemption with a 32-8 win over Victoria.

“The whole game we brought it a lot more than we did last week,” said Oiler senior Alex Hickel. “We had our swagger back. It felt pretty good to hold them to eight points. They’re a good football team so that’s pretty hard to do.”

After their opening season loss against the Russell Broncos, the Ellsworth Bearcats redeemed themselves with a 55-22 home win against the Republic County Buffaloes.

Republic County won the coin toss to begin the game and would receive on the south end.

In the first quarter, the ‘Cats kept the Buffs to just one touchdown while being able to run in two and a PAT.

Andrew Bair has been selected as the new chief executive officer at Ellsworth County Medical Center.

Bair will take over Oct. 8 from John Broberg, who has been the interim CEO since August.

HOLYROOD — Be informed. That is the message Central Plains USD 112 superintendent Greg Clark is urging patrons in each community in the district to be as the first of five community meetings on the district’s November bond election draws near.

“These meetings are not a vote yes meeting,” Clark said. “They are just an informational meeting. We’re not going to tell anybody to vote yes, and we’re not going to tell anybody to vote no. We’re just wanting to get the facts out there, so the voters can make a good, educated decision on something we need to do.”

Despite a year marked by persistent drought, last week’s heavy rains caused severe flash flooding in parts of Kansas, including Manhattan, where 300 people were forced to evacuate after flood waters began rising during the night.

The weekend’s powerful thunderstorms were only a precursor to more rain that fell over much of the week after a system stalled over central Kansas, adding even more moisture to an area already waterlogged.

The streets of Marquette flooded briefly (above) due to the heavy rains that began Monday, Sept. 3. Below, the pond at Eisenhower Park was full and overflowing. According to the McPherson County. Daily Precipitation Report, Marquette received 1.25 inches of rain Sept. 3, followed by .88 inches Tuesday, Sept. 4 and .40 inches Wednesday, Sept. 5. The week’s heavy precipitation wrapped up Thursday, Sept. 6 with 1.46 inches of rain.

The search for a new chief executive officer at Ellsworth County Medical Center continued Aug. 29, as a CEO candidate and his spouse visited the hospital and the community for a firsthand look and yet more interviews.

“The process is going very well,” said John Broberg, who was hired in July by the hospital board of directors as interim chief executive officer after longtime CEO Roger Masse retired.

As a girl growing up in west Ellsworth, Pauline Zvolanek only saw the vacant lot in her neighborhood used when the circus came to town and needed a place to set up or her father’s baseball team had a game.

Now, more than 70 years later, Carol Hicks, a resident of Zvolanek’s old neighborhood, said the still-vacant lot is used only five weeks a year by city soccer players.
