Davis wins three regional sprint titles

LYONS — Ellsworth junior Kaden Davis, won all three sprint titles Friday at the 3A Lyons regional track meet, winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.01; the 200-meter with a time of 22.20 and 400-meter with a time of 49.56. The victories qualify him to compete in the Kansas State High School Activities Association’s 6A-5A-4A-3A- 2A-1A State track meet May 27-28 in Wichita.

Oilers win State tennis

WICHITA — The second-ranked Central Plains boys’ tennis team won the tough 3A-2A-1A State tennis tournament Friday and Saturday in Wichita. It was the Oilers’ first State championship boys’ tennis trophy since the formation of the school when Claflin consolidated with Quivira Heights in 2011. Claflin claimed the State title in 2003 and 2007.

Regional sports events postponed

All Monday regional sports events have been postponed due to rain that covered most of the state.

ELLSWORTH — The Bearcat baseball game against Syracuse has been rescheduled to 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 17 at Larned.

The Lady ‘Cat softball game against Marion has been rescheduled to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 17 at Marion.

The Bearcat golfers will take the links at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 18 at Beloit.

CENTRAL PLAINS — The Oilers golf team will compete at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 17 in WaKeeney.

However, more rain is forecast for our area Tuesday. Watch this website for updates if they become necessary.

Monday’s regional schedules for Ellsworth County sports

LARNED — The Ellsworth Bearcat baseball team, currently sporting an 8-12 record, are seeded fifth in the Larned 3A regional baseball tournament and will play the fourth-seeded Syracuse Bulldogs (11-7) at 3 p.m. Monday May 16 in Larned.

MARION — The Lady ‘Cats (6-10) are seeded sixth in the Southeast of Saline 3A softball tournament and will meet third-seeded Marion (11-7) at 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 16, in Marion.

BELOIT — The Bearcat golf team continues to improve with each outing and will tee-off at 10 a.m. Monday, May 16, in Beloit at the 3A Beloit regional tournament.

WAKEENEY — The Central Plains Oilers’ golf team is also burning up the links and will compete in the Trego Community 2A regional golf tournament at 8:30 a.m. Monday, May 16 in WaKeeney.

Oilers win regional tennis tourney

HESSTON — The second-ranked Central Plains boys’ tennis team upset top-ranked Hesston Saturday to win the 3A-2A-1A Hesston regional tennis tournament with a total of 16 team points. Sterling placed second with 12; Hesston tied for third with fourth-ranked Hutchinson Trinity scoring 11; Sacred Heart placed fourth with seven; Ellsworth placed fifth with a point; Ellinwood and Hillsboro each scored goose eggs.

Oilers take second

ELLINWOOD — Bearcat Kaden Davis once again won all three sprints Friday at the Ellinwood track meet, winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.81; the 200-meter with a time of 22.37 and 400-meter with a time of 51.0. In team scoring, Central Plains placed second with 81 points and Ellsworth placed fourth with 69 out of a total of nine schools. St. John-Hudson won the meet with 97 points.

Tough meet for ‘Cats

SALINA — The Ellsworth Bearcat tennis team had a rough day on the courts Friday at the Salina Central quadrangular tennis meet, with number two singles player Sam Keener getting the only win of the day over Mason Richards of Junction City for the ‘Cats. The 5A Mustangs placed first as a team with nine points; 5A Maize South placed second with 8; 6A Junction City placed third with six and the ‘Cats placed fourth with one.

Mackey wins sprint at Wilson meet

RUSSELL — The weather was perfect for the 57th annual Wilson Invitational track meet April 25 in Russell, with temperatures in the low 80s, plenty of sunshine and a slight northern breeze. The Wilson Invitational is considered to be one of the longest continuous running track meets west of Topeka. This year’s meet was originally scheduled for April 19, but Wilson had reserved the Russell track for the following Monday as a “rain day.”

Wilson competes at Lincoln

LINCOLN — The Wilson boys’ track team placed fourth out of eight teams Friday at the Lincoln Invitational track meet. Bennington won the meet with 157 team points. The Dragons scored 79. It was a beautiful spring day, with temperatures in the lower 80s and light southerly winds.
