PALCO —  The Lady Dragon bench was the key to their 46-40 win over  Northern Plains League rival Natoma (15-7) Friday in the 1A Division II sub-State tournament in Palco.

 

The Lady Dragons will play their arch-rivals, the Lady Mustangs of Sylvan-Lucas Unified at 6 p.m. Saturday in the championship match.

ST. JOHN — The top-ranked, undefeated and two-time defending champion 2A Lady Oilers of Central Plains crushed Pratt Skyline, 66-28, Thursday, in St. John.

 

The Lady O’s will play South Central at 6 p.m. Saturday in the championship match at St. John. The Lady Timberwolves are ranked eighth in the state by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association.

‘Cats beat Panthers in final seconds

The Ellsworth Bearcats defeated a young and talented Phillipsburg club, 58-57, Monday in an exciting first round game of the 3A Norton sub-State boys’ basketball tournament in Ellsworth. Down 13 points (48-35) at the 7:48 mark of the fourth quarter, Bearcats Remington Cravens and Jordan Base made 3-balls; Cravens sank three charity shots; Kaden Davis made two breakaway layups and senior Zak Jacobo added a jump shot to lift the ‘Cats to a 1-point deficit, 57-56 with just 35 second left in the game.

Lady Oilers destroy Ellinwood Lady Eagles

CLAFLIN — The undefeated, top-ranked and two-time defending champion 2A Lady Oilers defeated the Lady Eagles of Ellinwood, 78-17, Monday in the first round of the 2A St. John-Hudson sub- State basketball tournament in Claflin. The mighty Lady Oilers rolled to a cushy 26-2 lead by the end of the first quarter. Central Plains added 20 points and held the Lady Eagles to two in the second period to have a whopping 46-4 halftime lead.

HAYS — The top-seeded Lady Monarchs of Thomas Moore Prep defeated the Lady Bearcats 63-17 in the first round of the 3A Norton sub-State basketball tournament in Hays.

 

The Lady ‘Cats gave up a lot of height and played with a lot of heart.

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Bearcats came from behind to get a 58-57 win over Phillipsburg in the final seconds of the first round of the 3A Norton sub-State basketball tournament in Ellsworth.

 

The Panthers are a good team comprised of sophomores and freshmen and grabbed the lead in the first quarter, but the Bearcats battled back, gaining the momentum of the game in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter.

3A Norton Community sub-State basketball tournament

ELLSWORTH — The fourth-seeded Bearcats, with an 11-9 record will play fifth-seeded 9-10 Phillipsburg at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 29 at the Bearcat Den in Ellsworth.

Ellsworth defeated the Panthers 58-57 in its second game of the season at the Amos Morris-George Stephens Basketball tournament in Lincoln. Norton, with a 17-3 record is ranked seventh by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association and is the top seed.

Haase wins regional wrestling tourney

BELOIT — Ellsworth’s Ethan Haase won the 195-pound bracket of the Beloit 3A-2A-1A regional wrestling tournament Saturday, qualifying him to compete in the 3A-2A-1A State wrestling tournament. Haase, a senior, was the only Bearcat to qualify for the tournament. Haase took care of business in his first match Friday, pinning Trystin McCoy of Republic County 48 seconds into the first period. He beat Southeast of Saline’s Dylan Marks in a 4-2 decision to advance to the quarter-final match. Haase beat Smith Center’s Avery Hawkins in an 11-9 decision Saturday to move into the championship bout.

‘Cats win two games

RUSSELL — The Bearcats beat Russell, 59-49, Monday in a North Central Activities Association make-up boys’ basketball game in Russell. The first quarter ended in a tie score, 13-13. Both teams added nine points in the second period for a 22-22 tie at halftime. The ‘Cats pulled ahead in the third quarter, scoring 16 points and holding the Broncos to 11. Ellsworth scored 21 points and held Russell to 16 in the final quarter.

RUSSELL — The Lady Broncos of Russell defeated Ellsworth, 44-28, Monday in a North Central Activities Association make-up girls’ basketball game in Russell. Russell posted a 19-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. Ellsworth scored 11 points and held the Lady Broncs to 10 for a 29-19 half-time score. Russell scored 10 points and the Lady ‘Cats made five in the third quarter for a 39-24 score. The Lady Broncs scored five points and Ellsworth made four in the final stanza.
