Sipriana was born March 26, 1929 in Kanopolis to Joe and Jessie Rodriguez.

Ellen was born Feb. 28, 1929 in Russell County Kan. to Carl and Minnie Borell Heinze. The family moved to Wilson in 1939.

She has been involved in many Wilson community affairs. Some may remember the community Christmas programs she directed at the Wilson Opera House. She is a life-long, active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Wilson.

Ellen married Larry Hanzlicek June 12, 1951. They have four children, Gay Busker of Russell, Scott and Barbara Hanzlicek of Hutchinson, Todd and Wanda Hanzlicek of Wilson, Kris and Lisa Hanzlicek of Lawrence; 11 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

A family birthday dinner is planned.

Birthdays

The family of Eugene C. 'Doc' Jarus invite you to share in his 90th birthday celebration of a life well lived, at a come and go reception from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Eaglecrest Retirement Community, 1501 E. Magnolia, Salina, Kan.

Doc was born Jan. 16, 1929, in Wilson, Kan., to Emil and Mayme (Soukup) Jarus. He attended Fort Hays State University and the University of Kansas. After serving as a commanding officer in the U.S. Army, he attended dental school in Kansas City, Mo., during which time he married Lucille Marie Ney June 8, 1957, in Wilson. They settled in Ellsworth, where he practiced dentistry for 30 years, retiring in the early 90s. He and Lu were active members of the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and many other area clubs and organizations. They moved to Eaglecrest in 2015.

Sadly, Doc lost the love of his life April 7, 2016.

Birthdays

Dale Grothusen, of Salina and formerly of Ellsworth, will celebrate his 100th birthday with a reception from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Brookdale Salina Fairdale, 2251 E. Crawford. Dale was born Dec. 17, 1918, in rural Ellsworth County.

On June 30, 1945, he married Dorothy Neuschafer, in Seattle, after he returned from service in World War II. He had completed 51 missions in Europe on the crew of B-17 bombers with the U.S. Army Air Force.

The Grothusens lived near Ellsworth for 70 years, operating a wheat and cattle business. Dale especially enjoyed projects in his machine shop. Dale served as an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth. The Grothusens are long-time polka dancing and big band enthusiasts.

Their children are Marsha, of Dallas, Ruth, of Eugene, Ore., and Bill, of Phoenix.
