RUSSELL — Coming into the Russell tournament with an 8-0 record , the Lady Oiler volleyball squad was looking to come out with another first place finish. They achieved their goal, although it didn’t come easy.

They started the morning with a tough Minneapolis team. Within the first 8 points of the day there were multiple lead changes before Junior Kylee Kasselman started a rally for the Lady O’s, serving six points in a row, putting the Oilers on top 13-8. Continuing to lead from there, the Lady Oilers finished the first set 25-19.

In the second set, the score was once again close, this time in Minneapolis’ favor. Similar to the first set, it was a service run that put the Oilers back in the lead, but this time by sophomore Taylor Oeser. After many long rallies, the Lady O’s came out with a win 25-23.

Lady O’s win

Article Image Alt Text

BY CASSIDY CRITES AND KYLEE KASSELMAN

Starting off Saturday morning with a dead suburban, forgotten kneepads and a jersey, the Lady O’s were not sure where the day was going to take them. All setbacks aside the Oilers geared up to take on their first opponent, the Knights of Sacred Heart. They immediately established dominance during the match winning in two, 25-15 and 25-13. With one win earned, the Oilers focused on the next match. The Lady Oilers started sluggish and barely skimmed past Republic County winning 26-24. The next set was a different story, burying the Buffaloes 25-11.

Ellsworth cross country team to build on 2014

By the I-R staff
The Bearcats cross country team had its first runner — Maggie Allen — qualify for State in 2014 after four years without a placement. Allen finished 52nd out of 99 runners. Coach Eric Coonrod hopes for a better finish this year for Allen, a sophomore, and others on both the boys’ and girls’ teams.
