GREAT BEND — The top-ranked, undefeated and two-time defending champion 2A Lady Oilers of Central Plains handed the Word Life Academy Fire its first loss of the season as the Lady O’s claimed the BCC Hillside Hoops High School Basketball Classic championship with a 63-51 victory Friday in Great Bend.

 

It was a quality game of basketball with good sportsmanship on both sides of the ball.

The top ranked, two-time defending 2A champion Lady Oilers defeated Central Prairie League Rival Ness City 70-36 Thursday at the BCC Hilltop Hoops Classic girls’ basketball tournament in Great Bend.

Kylee Kasselman seemed to be unstoppable beneath the rim in the third quarter and scored 18 points in the win.

The Lady Oilers, currently undefeated at 11-0 for the season, will play a good Word of Life Academy team in the championship game at 8:15 p.m. at Barton Community College.

The undefeated Lady Fire team (10-0) has a lot of height, good shooting skills and can defend beneath the rim as they defeated fifth-ranked 2A Moundridge, 47-42, in the semi-final game Thursday.

WILSON — The pink-clad Lady Dragons hit the hardwood at a blistering pace, passed the ball well and Katelyn Zelenka hit three consecutive treys as Wilson pulled away in the second quarter to get a convincing 52-39 win over Osborne in the Dragon Den.

 

The Dragons roared back from a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs held on to get a 51-45 win in a Northern Plains League game.

GREAT BEND — The undefeated, top-ranked and two-time defending champion 2A Lady Oilers had little trouble routing Little River, 77-16 Jan. 25 in the first round of the Barton Community College Hilltop Hoops Classic in Great Bend. The Lady O’s will play the winner of the Ness City versus Ell-Saline game at 8:15 p.m. Thursday at BCC.

OILERS WIN 48th ANNUAL ST. JOHN WINTER CLASSIC

 

ST. JOHN — The top-ranked and undefeated 2A Oilers beat fourth-ranked 2A and defending 2015 2A champion St. John 51-38 Saturday in the championship match of the tournament in St. John.

HAYS — Ellsworth’s David Koralek III wrestled well in the 138-pound consolation bracket, but was eliminated one match away from the medal rounds Saturday at the tough Bob Kuhn Prairie Classic wrestling tournament at Hays High School.

 

As a team, the boys all won their first bouts and lost their second matches, placing the entire team in the tough consolation brackets.

HOISINGTON — The Lady ‘Cats put one in the win column by a score of 51-42 over the Lady Knights of Victoria in the consolation bracket of the Cardinal Winter Jam basketball tournament in Hoisington.

The Lady ‘Cats will play for fifth place at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the Activity Center at Hoisington.

The Ellsworth Bearcats exploded against a good LaCrosse team, getting a 51-21 win in their consolation bracket game.

ST. JOHN — The Central Plains Oilers defeated Ness City Thursday in the St. John Winter Classic basketball tournament in St. John.

The Oilers will take on the Pratt Greenbacks at 8:15 p.m. Friday in St. John.
