The Ellsworth Bearcats ended the 2014-15 season with a respectable 10-11 record under first year head coach Trevor Kuhlman. Kuhlman returns for his second season at the helm and will have Torrey Elder and Cody Zenger to assist him.

Ellsworth grappling team small but mighty

The Ellsworth Bearcats will once again be a small grappling team this season with a total of eight boys out for the squad. “We probably won’t be winning many duals,” said head coach Clint Freeman, “But what we lack in quantity, we will make up for in quality.”

Lady Oiler Taylor Rolfs was an unanimous selection to the 2015 Central Prairie League’s all-league first volleyball team. Rolfs was also placed on the State tournament team.

Central Plains tames Mavericks

CLAFLIN — The second-ranked 2A Central Plain Oilers went to the air to defeat the Kiowa County Mavericks 46-0 and claim the Bi-District trophy Nov. 3 in Claflin. The game was the first of the 8-man Division I State play-off games. The Mavericks had three experienced, athletic and huge linemen with 6’ senior Eric Torres at 276 pounds; junior Franko Holguin at 5’9” and 273 pounds and senior Aaron Heft at 6’ 289 pounds. Central Plains won the coin-toss, but elected to defend the goal as the game started.

Spearville lances Oilers’ title quest

SPEARVILLE — The top-ranked 8-man Division I Royal Lancers of Spearville ended the second-ranked Central Plains Oilers’ football season with a convincing 58-28 win Saturday in Spearville. Central Plains won the coin-toss and elected to kick the ball. The Lancers drove the ball down field with hard running by Luke Heskamp and quarterback Nathan Stein and found the goal line on a 3-yard run with 8:22 left in the first period. The Lancers tacked on the PAT points for an 8-0 lead.

The undefeated Lady Oilers of Central Plains hold aloft the 2A State championship volleyball trophy Saturday in Emporia, after defeating Heritage Christian Academy of Olathe in three sets. The Lady O’s were one of two teams to finish the season undefeated, a tough accomplishment in volleyball.

CLAFLIN --- The second-ranked 2A Central Plains Oilers were far too powerful in the air for the Mavericks, throwing to a 46-0 Bi-District football game in Claflin.

The long awaited rematch of the Oilers versus top-ranked Spearville will be at 7 p.m. in Spearville.

EMPORIA --- The undefeated Lady Oilers of Central Plains won the 2A State Volleyball tournament Saturday over Christian Heritage Academy of Olathe in three sets at William Allen White auditorium in Emporia.   

The Lady O’s hit the courts determined to take the championship and kept focused at a high level of play against some quality teams.
