Tuesday’s tales from the hardwood

Point guard Michael Ryan grins at the Oilers’ bench as the final second ticks off the clock for the win against defending 2A State champion St. John-Hudson Tuesday in St. John.

OILERS DEFEAT ST. JOHN-HUDSON

ST.JOHN — The formerly second-ranked 2A Central Plains Oilers defeated the defending two-time 2A State champion Tigers of St. John Hudson 55-48.

Like all Oilers versus Tiger battles for the past four years, it was an exciting and top-notch game of basketball. Only the Tigers and 6A Derby have defeated Central Plains in the past three seasons.

The O-men ended the Tigers’ 63-game winning streak — a new state record just set after St. John-Hudson’s early season tournament victory.

The top-ranked defending two-time 2A State champion 2A Lady Oilers returned to their well-oiled-scoring-machine mode against the Lady Tigers in the devastating 46-15 win over St. John-Hudson.

St. John scored four points in the first half and didn’t get into double-digits until the fourth quarter. The Lady O’s simply scored at will.
