Lemley pleads guilty

Former Kanopolis businessman Allen Eugene Lemley pleaded guilty Dec. 14 in Ellsworth County District Court to two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child under 14. The proceeding took just 12 minutes. Lemley, 54, the former owner of Al’s Pitstop in Kanopolis, will be sentenced at 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, in Ellsworth County District Court.

EMTs train to address growing patient violence

Strapped and buckled down in the back of an Ellsworth Emergency Medical Service ambulance, Shawn Shipley thrashed in his restraints, defied requests to calm down and grabbed nearby EMS technician Doug Apley. In any other scenario, an aggressive patient could be a hazard to themselves and medical personnel.

The 11th annual Marquette Christmas Celebration started the afternoon of Saturday, Dec. 3, with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus in the Elizabeth A. Hopp Fine Arts dance studio. Children of all ages gave their Christmas wish lists to Santa and had their picture taken by Marilyn Hendricks.

Home Lumber eyes Ellsworth Wal-Mart store

There may soon be a new — yet familiar — tenant occupying the former Wal-Mart building in northeast Ellsworth. “We have made an offer on it, but have not closed yet,” John Humphreys, president of the Ashland, Kan.-based Home Lumber, said Monday afternoon during a telephone interview with the Independent-Reporter.
