THE LADY OILERS WIN THIRD TRIP TO 2A STATE

 

ST. JOHN --- The top-ranked and defending 2A champs earned the right to defend their title at the 3A State tournament in Emporia.

 

The Lady O’s placed third in 2014 and claimed the title in 2015.

Smoky Hills distributes $58,000

Ellsworth County’s recently-established fair association is working to upgrade the fair grounds. A $11,868 grant from the Smoky Hills Charitable Foundation will allow the organization to purchase 24 goat and sheep pens to be installed by volunteers. The association’s grant was included in a 13-grant fall distribution totalling about $58,000. In all, the foundation received grant requests for $216,000.

DOWN ON THE FARM

Ellsworth Elementary School fourth graders participate in a relay race involving the matching of different types of cattle brands during the annual Kids Ag Day Oct. 12 at the Steve Dlabal farm near Wilson. About 150 students from Ellsworth and Russell counties learned about life on the farm.

The general election is Nov. 8; however, advance voting started Oct. 19 in the Ellsworth County Courthouse office of the county clerk and election officer. To help voters with their decisions, the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter is running a series of candidate questions and answers in contested races.

High Fun!

This year’s 27th annual Marquette Melodrama and Olio will feature “Go Slow With the Pony Express,” a tale of high drama and fun. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4 and 5, and at 2 p.m Sunday, Nov. 6, at the Elizabeth A. Hopp Fine Arts Center.

Shepack selected as county counselor

Ellsworth County attorney Joe Shepack will be the Ellsworth County counselor, effective Jan. 10, 2017. Ellsworth County commissioners approved creating a separate county counselor’s position Monday during their weekly meeting — and Shepack accepted the job.

Student enrollment up this year

Dale Brungardt, superintendent of Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo USD 327, had a smile on his face Friday morning during an interview with the Independent-Reporter. And with good reason. As of the Sept. 20 count date, USD 327 had a total of 639 students — up 10 from the year before.

The general election is Nov. 8; however, advance voting starts Oct. 19 in the Ellsworth County Courthouse office of the county clerk and election officer. To help voters with their decisions, Wilson Communications and the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter will sponsor a candidate forum at 7 p.m. today (Thursday, Oct. 13) in the Wilson School Commons.
