Vehring wins Ellsworth County Spelling Bee

     Adam Vehring, a seventh grade student at Ellsworth Junior-Senior High School, correctly spelled the word mirage Wednesday morning to win the 2016 Ellsworth County Spelling Bee.
     Vehring will represent Ellsworth County at the 2016 Sunflower Spelling Bee Saturday, March 5, at Fort Hays State University in Hays.

The word is still consolidation

Wilson would join the Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo School District, according to a “best guess” analysis from the Kansas Association of School Boards on the effects of proposed consolidation legislation. In fact, the entire Central Plains School District, which also includes Holyrood, Lorraine, Bushton and Claflin, would join Ellsworth and USD 327, according to the analysis.

O’Connors surprised at Chamber meeting

Ellsworth’s Diane and Michael O’Connor attended Saturday’s 68th annual Ellsworth-Kanopolis Chamber of Commerce dinner and meeting at the Ellsworth American Legion building thinking they were just the event’s official photographers. Unbeknownst to the O’Connors, however, that was only part of the story.

Poetry gives Vietnam veteran a voice

Poetry has been part of Robert Shaffer’s life off and on since he was a student at Ellsworth High School in the 1960s. It sustained him through the difficult years following his return from the Vietnam War. It provided a memorial for those he lost. And it gave him a voice he wouldn’t have had otherwise.

Digging Up the Past

Marquette Main Street has a new look. With the new streamline diagonal parking, Main Street is much wider for traffic, and has less danger for backing out accidents. You also have the convenience of getting in and out of the new wider cars where before if you were able to park, chances are you couldn’t open the door. Marquette High school’s 1966 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow is Patricia A. Patrick.

Unruh: 4-H is for everyone

As a 12-year member of 4-H, Nicolette Unruh attended events across the United States, spent six weeks in Australia and developed the connections and confidence she needed for future success. “4-H shaped a lot of my life. I look back and I think everything,” Unruh said.

For the past 25 years, Mary Smith, a cook at Ellsworth Junior-Senior High School, has arrived at work with a smile on her face. “I love it,” she said in a recent interview with the Independent-Reporter. “I like being around the kids and the girls are good to work with.”

WATCHING THE SNOW FALL

Former house cat Princess Jasmine-Tabby-Cat — abandoned by her former owners to a farm northeast of Ellsworth — watches in disdain from a semi-dry perch as snow falls. About 2-3 inches of snow fell across Ellsworth County Jan. 20, adding much needed moisture to the county’s wheat fields and pastures. Her pitiful meowing did not gain her access to the farmhouse.
