‘What concerns me’ for public education

By Jon Paden

Special to the Tribune

For those who may not know me well, I have been in public education for 25 years, proudly 20 of those years have been at Windom Elementary School in USD 444. I also am a third generation educator and administrator, so when I went into this business I knew it was more for the intrinsic rewards than the extrinsic.

Holyrood without power

Article Image Alt Text

Crews from Western Electric out of Ellsworth work to re-establish power to the city of Holyrood Feb. 22 in Holyrood./ I-R photograph by Mark McCoy.

HOLYROOD — Citizens of the city of Holyrood will be without power, water and sewer services for most of the day following an electrical sub-station failure early Monday morning in Holyrood.

Holyrood police chief Dave Chamberlain said the sub-station failed about 4 a.m. Holyrood crews were in the process of investigating the power failure at about 5 a.m. when Frank Vasquez, of 509 Charles Street (located behind the transformer station) informed the crews that he had a house fire.

The Holyrood Fire Department responded and put out the electrical fire. Units from the Ellsworth Fire Department also responded, since the city’s recently purchased emergency generator to pump water was still not on-line and the Holyrood Fire Department wanted to insure that it had enough water on hand to fight the house fire. The fire was extinguished with minimal structural damage.

Demanding Answers

By LINDA MOWERY-DENNING

Days after proposed legislation that would have mandated countywide school district consolidation failed in committee, local legislators said they see signs of compromise — or at least a willingness to listen — something that has been in short supply in recent legislative sessions. “I do think the temperature in the room has changed,” Sen. Richard Wilborn, R-McPherson, said Saturday.

Winning coach passes away Feb. 3

Article Image Alt Text

When news of the passing of Coach Larry Markley reached Marquette recently, there were many memories that came to mind for members of the 1960-61 Marquette High School football team. Markley was fresh out of Bethany College and starting his coaching career as the Marquette High School football coach. The 1960 team was undefeated and un-scored upon. It is quite a record that few Kansas teams have overcome to this day. Coach Markley received the league certificate of honor and was inducted with his team into the Kansas Sports Museum/Kansas Sports Hall of Fame, now located in Wichita, in 2010.
