Tour of sewer ponds points to need for new storage shed for equipment

The tour by Ellsworth City Council members of the city water system continued Wednesday March 9, with a theme that could have been “Make the best of what you’ve got.” Council members Holly Fries and Wayne Scritchfield, city administrator Scott Moore, and mayor John Whitmer devoted an hour to touring and learning about the workings of the sewer ponds on the east side the city.

Cut the red tape

U.S. Rep. Tim Huelskamp, almost an hour late from a town hall meeting at Lincoln, rushed into the council chambers at Ellsworth City Hall March 10 and immediately went into his anti-big government speech. About two dozen attended the meeting, part of the Republican congressman’s annual tour of his Big First District.

New rec center in Ellsworth’s future?

Born from a need to tackle the issues of obesity and diabetes in Ellsworth County, a group has been formed to enhance local options for health and wellness. The first venture of the Ellsworth County Recreation Foundation is to explore the possibility of creating a new health and wellness center, using the vacant portion of the Ellsworth County Medical Center Administration Building, to the north of the hospital.

Fire department receives $2,500 equipment donation

McPherson County RFD 2 has received a $2,500 donation from America’s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund and directed by farmer, Dee Anne Johnson of McPherson County. The donation will help the Marquette Rural Fire Department purchase new equipment.

Goin’ with the Flow

Ellsworth is not Flint, Mich. Not even close. But the trouble the community has experienced with its water system is a cautionary tale for other towns — water and the systems that deliver it to customers should never be taken for granted. “As we try to plan, if you look at Flint, Mich., or any community, you want to make sure you deliver a clean, quality product,” said Ellsworth city administrator Scott Moore. For several years now, Ellsworth officials have talked about the future of the town’s water system, in terms of both source and distribution.

Cruz and Sanders trump rivals

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz received the most votes Saturday from Ellsworth County Republicans; however, it was two local candidates who grabbed the spotlight during the party’s presidential caucus at the Ellsworth County Courthouse. Ellsworth County commission chairman Kermit Rush and county attorney Joe Shepack both announced their intentions to seek re-election. Rush’s decision was especially surprising because he announced months ago this would be his final term.

Ellsworth County targeted for growth

Ellsworth County is expected to gain an additional thousand residents between now and 2064, according to a forecast released recently by the Center for Economic Development and Business Research at Wichita State University. Only 20 of the state’s 105 counties are projected to have population increases, while the other 85 are forecast to have population declines. The bulk of those increases are expected to take place in regional centers such as Salina, Ellis and Sedgwick counties.

Smoky Valley wrestlers compete at State

Austin Lustfield, (jr. — 126 lbs. 5th seed), Marquette, wrestling at the Regional Tournament at home on Saturday, Feb. 20, took on Kody Gibson from Jefferson West in the first round of bracket action at State and won the match with a fall at the 0:32 mark. Austin then defeated Bryce Ledford of Winfield with a 7-2 decision. A loss to eventual State champion Emmanuel Browne of Kansas City — Sumner Academy in a close decision (3-2) moved Austin to the other side of the bracket but he got back on the winning track with a 7-1 decision over Gad Huseman of Tonganoxie.

Local investigation into Great Bend bus incident yields potential charges

Ellsworth County Sheriff Tracy Ploutz has handed over the results of his investigation into alleged incidents that took place the evening of Feb. 6 aboard a USD 428 Great Bend school bus as it passed through Ellsworth County on its way home from a swim meet in Manhattan.
Ploutz told the Independent-Reporter Thursday he believes enough evidence exists to charge five suspects with battery and three suspects with criminal restraint.  
A final decision on charges will be made by Ellsworth County attorney Joe Shepack, who received the sheriff’s report Wednesday morning.
Ploutz said six victims have been identified. The victims and the suspects range in age from 14 through 17 years. Because of the ages of the students involved and the nature of the alleged crimes, no names are being released to the public. However, at least one of the victims and his family have gone public with their allegations.
