In a telephone interview this morning with the Independent-Reporter, Kanopolis City clerk Yvonne “Bonnie” Stoppel said Kanopolis is not under a drinking water warning.
“The things you read on Facebook,” she said.
Stoppel said a water sample collected by city crewmen Aug. 15 in the city’s Water Well 7 showed a nitrate level of 13 mg/L. This is above the 10 mg/L maximum federal standard. Stoppel said the well was turned off. Crewmen turned the well back on briefly Sept. 22 to take another water sample, then shut it down again. The water sample was sent to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for testing. Stoppel talked to KDHE officials Sept. 26, but no results were available yet.
Stoppel said a flyer was distributed to Kanopolis residents Sept. 26 advising them of the situation. The flyer said nitrates in drinking water are a serious health concern for infants less than six months old.
