Wilson games at Lincoln postponed

LINCOLN — The Wilson High School boys’ and girls’ basketball games against Beloit, scheduled for Dec. 16, have been cancelled due to weather according to Wilson athletic director Tony Brokes.

The basketball games have been rescheduled to be played Tuesday, Jan. 31 in Lincoln.

Bearcat basketball games against Beloit, wrestling at Ellsworth cancelled

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth High School boys’ and girls’ basketball games against Beloit scheduled for Dec. 16 have been cancelled according to EJSHS athletic director Ron Davis Jr. The decision concerning the EHS Round Robin wrestling tournament will be made by 1 p.m. Davis said in a follow-up text message.

          The basketball games will be re-scheduled at a later date.

UPDATE: The round robin wrestling tournament scheduled for 4 p.m. in Ellsworth was also cancelled due to weather and will not be rescheduled.

The Wilson Dragon basketball games against the Leopards in Lincoln and the Central Plains Oilers basketball games against Larned in Claflin are still scheduled to be played as of this posting.

‘Cats place third

RUSSELL — The Ellsworth Bearcats placed third in the Amos Morris-George Stephens Basketball tournament Saturday with a 60-46 win over 2A Ell-Saline in Russell. Ellsworth jumped to a 20-14 lead by the end of the first period. The Cardinals won the second stanza by scoring 16 points and holding the ‘Cats to 11 for a 34-30 halftime score in favor of Ellsworth.

Saturday’s basketball tournament updates

TESCOTT --- The Lady Dragons continue to improve on the court, defeating the Lady Trojans of Tescott, 54-41, Friday at Tescott.

 

The Dragons have also upped their level of play, dominating Tescott for a 41-37 win in the boys’ game.

Amos Morris-George Stephens Tournament

RUSSELL — The top-ranked, three-time defending 2A champion Lady Oilers of Central Plains extended their current winning streak to 34 games with a 94-12 win over the luckless Lady Leopards of Lincoln Tuesday at Ruppenthal Junior High School in Russell. Lady O head coach Pat Stiles tried to slow the scoring down, but his bench is almost as powerful as his starting line-up. The Lady Leopards played hard, but Central Plains is once again loaded with talent.

The Lady ‘Cats were far too powerful for the Lady Panthers of Phillipsburg, winning the first round game of the Amos Morris-George Stephens basketball tournament by a score of 47-19, Tuesday at Russell High School. Lady ‘Cat head coach Ken Cravens played his bench players for most of the final stanza. Ellsworth did a great job of focusing on the game.

Lady ‘Cats get win

LYONS — The Ellsworth Lady Bearcat varsity basketball team got a big, season-opening win Friday, 43-42, over the Lady Lions in a nonleague game at Lyons. The first quarter ended in an 11-11 tie, but the Lady ‘Cats won the second stanza by scoring 11 points and holding Lyons to six for a 22-17 halftime lead.

Bearcats beat Lyons

LYONS — The Ellsworth Bearcats won their season opener by a score of 49-37 over the Lions of Lyons Friday in Lyons. The Lions had a 13-9 lead by the end of the first quarter, but the Ellsworth defense came alive and shut down the Lions’ scoring in the second stanza, holding Lyons to 11 points while the ‘Cats scored 18 for a 27-24 halftime lead.

Friday’s roundball roundup

LYONS — The Ellsworth Bearcats beat the Lions of Lyons 49-37 in a non-conference baksetball game at Lyons. The ‘Cats took control of the game in the third quarter.

Four Oilers on CPL all-league first teams

Senior Trey Schulte (45) was named to the CPL’s all-league first team with an unanimous decision as a defensive lineman and also was placed on the first team as an offensive lineman.
